Napster was the first, followed by Audiogalaxy, then Kazaa Lite, then BitTorrent/Ares.
BT kicks the asses of all the rest.

1.Napster(version 1.6 was the first one...good old times :)
2.Imesh(oh my god)
3.Morpheus and Audiogalaxy
4.Kazaa and same time Songspy(Ag down and Morpheus too)
5.Kazaalite (finally a great kazaa)
NOW:Limewire,shareaza,ares and piolet
I had good times...I remember that a friend telled me about a program were you can download songs for free with a technology of sharing!well...he said it was a program called Nepster...ok www.nepster.com ...nothing! I gave it up. 2 weeks later he mailed me the adress and since this time its a part of my life ;) I rember how happy I was after downloading my first song with my 56k modem!
I would say that I found a lot more music on napster then on any other program right now....

I was going to do a list, then realised it'd stretch half way down the page. Napster was the first.

I have tried almost all of them.
But I still like Usenet the best.
Been there since '98.
I now mostly use Grabit for binaries.
And PowerPost 2000 for posting binaries.

Modestas, you can go to oldversions.com and download a version of the old napster to take a look at the program.

I never could download anything off of XoloX, which turned me off of Gnutella.

I've tried almost all, but the ones which I used over a longer period of time were:
1. Morpheus
2. Audiogalaxy
3 Kazaa (as it wasn't flooded with shit-ware yet)
4. Kazaa lite
5. Ares + Bittorent (Azureus) --> current setup

I've tried most gnutella's spyware free clients and others (WinMX, Piolet, etc.) but i switched back to those three.
1. Morpheus on FastTrack (the first p2p that i've got virus but it's good ol' days)
2. Kazaa Lite (i switched since Morpheus left FT network but the prog has no improvement with hashing)
3. eDonkey / Ares (so far, so good)

LOL, dogster, I remember that guy. I guess I'm still waiting for it too.
Napster, then Morpheus (on FT), then Morpheus PE (on Gnutella), then Gnucleus, then Kazaa Lite, then Filetopia, now ABC (Bittorrent). Didn't get to use Napster at home much though(56k), used it via the college's network and it was wonderful.

http://www.zeropaid.com/torrent/
Modestas when you are looking for p2pware why not look at the first page of zeropaid? This will make you seem very hip and super-intelligent as compared to, you know

Sorry, just had to chime in on this question...being I was around before the days of Napster.
The very very first one was for me was the windows network neighborhood.
Then from there I first went through some sites that people might not think of when thinking p2p, it went Scour, Audiogalaxy, OTH.net, then on to the good ones that you all mentioned...Napster, then Audiogalaxy Satellite, and finally Kazaa Lite & WinMX (I don't like changing programs too much)
Favorite One by Far? AudioGalaxy Satellite, and I still miss it!

Modestas....
I think you are having problems understanding the concept of the whole Bittorent idea! I for some reason I did too, although there's nothing simpler! To explain it in really simple terms. The idea is similar to that of audiogalaxy. You download any "torrent" client e.g azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) or BitTornado or ABC etc. There are tons!
I recommend azureus. It has the most user friendly interface and you can tweak it nicely. Now...you can go to torrent sites such as e.g www.suprnova.org, http://www.torrentreactor.com/ or http://torrent.youceff.com/. Once again...there is a wide selection. These sites will offer various files to download and when you do, the file practically downloads over your torrent client!
To get started there's no need to know more about it. You'll get used to it very quickly.
BTW....seeds = people who are sharing the full file
DL's = people who are downloading the file
good luck...
