'There's a Lot of Animosity Toward This Film That Is Very Real,' says One Oscar-Campaign Vet; but Snub Could Lead to Boycott of Awards
Most Believe 'Fahrenheit' Nomination Tied to the Election
NEW YORK, Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite shattering box-office records and dominating headlines for months, "The Passion of the Christ" and "Fahrenheit 9/11" face real obstacles in the race for an Oscar nomination for best picture. As Senior Writer Sean Smith reports in the current issue of Newsweek, many of the high-placed studio executives, producers, Oscar strategists, publicists and Academy members interviewed think that "Fahrenheit's" chances depend on the results of the presidential election, and all say that a "Passion" best-picture nod is almost unthinkable.
"A lot of older Academy voters, who are largely Jewish, refuse to even see this movie," says one Oscar-campaign vet. "There's a level of animosity toward this film that is very real. When I talk to the members, I hear it over and over and over again." Complicating matters, says one exec, is the sense, fair or not, that Mel Gibson marketed the film as something Hollywood couldn't, or wouldn't, make. "It's a little weird to trash the establishment, and then to come knocking at the establishment's door during awards season."
But if "The Passion" gets shut out, there's a concern that some Christians could protest and -- worst-case scenario -- boycott the Oscars. "The born- agains will come out screaming that it's another case of censorship," says one source. "The whole Sodom and Gomorrah thing about Hollywood will come up again."

God, get over it, ppl. If christians revolt, then they are revolting against everything they believe in--tolerance in the face of adversity, patience, and love. Too bad they really aren't true christians that believe in their own goddamned morals. Cheeze.

hell piss off the christians, my mother being one of them. They can bitch all they want its what they enjoy dooing. Seriously I dont thinkthe film deserves didly squat even tho i never saw it. There is a too large bias that can be drawn with judging because either you are loving ther movie because you are cristian or you hate it. Its that simple. It wont be judged on for its ability but for everything else. I bet you anything if its not in there cristian churches the priest will talk about how much of a outrage it is and how its sad that blah blah blah. I say piss them off the religion is dying anyway. From the looks of the churches I have been to most of the members are gonna be dead in about 10 years they are all in there 70-80's.

The issue of whether Passion should be receiving an award should not be in anyway impacted by the controversy that surrounds it. Although inveitably there will always be those who are offended by religious subject matter, we need to ask if this was a good film in its own right. I personally think it was poorly directed with not one moment where I could hear myself saying "Well I never expected that". Yes it was a gore fest, but I found it truely unshocking and tedious throughout. A thoroughly lacklustre effort designed to stir debate but offering no depth of insight.

If we have to deal with Jewish bullshit and tolerance.....then they should have to fucking watch the fucking movie.
If I said I wasn't going to watch any Jewish movies because they are Jewish movies.....then I'd be fucking linched.
It really sucks to be a White Christian in America today. Everyone in the world can rip on you and point their finger at you......but it isn't tolerated if we do the same........bastards.....
I want every slave story BANNED from academy awards......they depict white people badly and cause anti-caucasian sentiment.

What movie should win? I think Kill Bill should walk away with it or maybe Team America.

Damn who the hell lit the fuse on your tampn bud!
The vast majority of movies that win big at the box office and are nominated for numerous awards, very seldom receive all the awards if any.
Besides if you you took the Passion and modernized it, all you would have is another slasher horror film. It is no different then, Nightmare, Jason, or Texas Chainsaw, they all have torture, blood and death to.

Your doing a bang up job yourself of depicting white (caucasian) people badly.
Last if you want to be taken seriously as a god fearing, down on your knees, all loving Christian (white, black, yellow, plad or whatever) dump the avatar with the gleeful nut pointing two hand guns at everyone and drop the obscene words. Some how I don't think that is something Jesus would do. Nothing worse then an un-Christian, Christian

Ok, it seems several people are saying the movie is bad WITHOUT EVEN SEEING IT, so get over yourself if you don't want to watch it then don't, but don't go around trashing a movie you haven't seen, it makes you look like a Moron. I did see the movie and it was very good, far better than Farenheit 9/11.
and Ne007, I really hope you are trolling.

If by "Modernize" you mean remove all context AND Content then yes, it would be.

wow this sure turned into biggot fest in a hurry
quick question--if a movie made you into the enemy (whatever you may be), do you think you would jump out and see it in the theater, then give it an award?
i doubt it
