The quality is not lost and the burning had nothing to do with it, are you trying to play them on a dvd player or something? Basically when green squares appear then it means the movie is in xvid format and you needcertain players to play those files correctly. The newest verrsion of Divx works for xvids and if you do want to watch them on a dvd player then convert them to mpegs using TMPGenc.

whats wrong with the cd's? Cdeznuts! J/K
The quality could be lost if you had errors burning the disc. Do you ever let whatever program your using check for errors? Also it could be just your computer having trouble streaming the video from CD. Are the discs dirty? It could be a number of things really.

Different movies have been encoded with different bitrates. The higher bitrates may be causing the streaming problems.

I would reccomend VLC (video Lan). Its free, and open source. You don't need any codecs to make it run, and it has many features to improve the quality of the image, such as post processing, and decubing.

edit: If you would still like to use a player you are familiar with, this little program will remove the annoying neon-green blocks that appear in your xvid encoded movies.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761&package_id=60533
its called dsp2show. you may also need ffdshow, which is under the same SF.net project as dsp2show.

yeah wonderboy vlc is excellent player.
btw on a side note if your curious what type of codecs you need download gspot the program.
instal gspot and open the movie file from the cd and it will tell you what codecs you need.
however if you use vlc player your file should play just fine.

You might be having some trouble with the overlay. I'm pretty sure there are multiple overlay methods in VLC, but I don't know off hand how to change. Anyway, that might be your problem.
you might also try getting the latest drivers for your video card - sometimes that can be a problem.
edit: to fiddle with the video options in VLC, go to Settings > Preferences. Then click the 'video' option, which appears right before 'plugins.' at the bottom right of the screen, check the 'advanced' radio button. now you should have a whole bunch of options.
under video output mode, select either DirectX or Windows GDI.
you might also try checking/unchecking the 'overlay video output' radio button.
