Well I can't really help you, as I haven't ever used WinME, and I havent used Windows 98 in almost, lets see, 3 years now. But Windows ME is bug ridden and your best chance of solving the problem is just to get Windows XP. I'm pretty sure everyone else is going to tell you to get rid of ME as well. Someone may have an actual solution though, but good luck.

did you do a full format and reinstall from cd, or reinstall over itself? has this happened ever since you got the computer, or was it after any specific thing? do you have trouble if you download the update and install without using the windows update site?

Windows ME has to be the worst Windows OS to use. If i was you, i'd use Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

A few questions for you...

Has it always done this ? From your original post, it doesn't seem to be something you are used to.. but when did it start ? Can you recall any (even minor) modifications done to software (add/remove/update) or hardware ?

Your internet problem sounds unrelated, but who knows. Is this internet problem more recent ? Is it just with Internet Explorer ? Have you tried other browsers ? How about contacting your internet service provider ?

When you said you reinstalled Windows, did you use a system restore disk or an actual Windows install CD ?

If you can produce clear and detailed answers to these questions, perhaps we can come closer to the problem and maybe even a solution.

Saying "Windows ME is all gay and stuff, use Windows XP" is just about the most idiotic advice you can give. If you cant help, why reply? Just to improve your precious post count? Spending $150 on a new OS is hardly a solution. Theres no need to download any pirated version either, which Im sure a l33t d00d like yourself (whatever genius suggested using XP) has done.

I have Windows ME and other than the lack of DOS, I dont have any problems with it. I had a virus a couple years ago, and re-installed it from the cd's that you appear to be using. Theres System Recovery #1 and #2. You need both. Theres also a Driver Recovery CD. You probably need that too. The Application Recovery CD I think didnt work right for me, but its not necessary. It just has Word Perfect programs, I think. I have those programs now, though so I dont know where I got them. Same place Hawkburn got his copy of Windows XP, probably.

Ok heres what you do first
Update internet explorer to latest version first of all get the updates, reboot then you are going to have to
reopen internet explorer.
Next do this as exactly as I state its important.
On the top you will see Tools click on it until you see internet options, once you do that click on Security. Next click on Custom Level.

Once you do that you must change these settings as follows.
Enable Active x controls
Enable unsigned Active x controls
Enable and Intialize active x controls
Enable run active x controls
Enable activx x controls.
Basically enable everything in there ok. *do this temporary*
apply the changes.
restart internet explorer
*note make sure everything is enabled that way when u go click on windows update you will be able to have the scripting on to have the downloads.

Proceed to download whatever you want. After u download what you want reboot *obviously*
next click on internet explorer go to the tools option again, then click security the click custom level.

After you do this you will see a reset box scroll up till you see high leave it on high, then click reset,
it will ask you to change the settings say yes click ok. Now all will be fine

next step go download mozilla firefox *dont use internet explorer again only if you have no choice*
this should work
peace

legin so would u think hardrive is likelt the prob?

I dont know. I never really figured out what your problem was. If you cant use Windows Update, its not a big deal. Ive never updated Windows ME. The website problems seem minor, and not something that required a re-installation of Windows ME. You could have just re-installed Explorer or used a different browser.

I have four backup cds, one is for drivers (you dont seem to have that). I dont think I even used that, though so I dont know if its necessary.

Whatever the problem is, I dont think its the hard drive. Just re-install ME again, if its something serious.

Oh right. Thats absolutely nothing. Hope you didnt re-install Windows over that. I have the same problem here and on a small number of other boards. The only thing I can think that causes it is Proxomitron or some other ad-blocking setup I have. I just use K-Meleon to post. Its a browser. Can be found here: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/

And to think Hawkburn suggested spending $150 for Windows XP over this "problem". He certainly doesnt have a career in technical support ahead of him.

Legin I can certainly respect your approach to this thread, and believe it is far more productive than those before.. but I think you need to take it easy. ^_^

dime, have you tried using scan disk and possibly defragging your harddrive ? This may, perhaps, solve the problem with your harddrive seeming to lose the updates.

First, you want to use scan disk so you can find any errors. Restart the computer and as it is rebooting, start repeatedly pressing the Delete key (not the backspace, the delete key) until you come to a black screen with white letters asking you which mode you want to boot in. Choose safe mode. (If Delete doesn't work and takes you to a different area called Bios, exit, reboot, and try pressing the F8 key as it is starting up. It's been a while since I have used WinMe)

Once started up, please do the following:
1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Run and type scandisk in the box. Press enter or click OK.
3. Click the drive you wish to scan (most likely your only drive, which is probably also C).
4. If this is your first time running scan disk, I recommend choosing the thorough scan option.
5. Start the scanning.

A few things you should remember are that this should only be done in safe mode, otherwise it will keep restarting itself because other processes are interrupting it. Another thing you should know is not to run anything else on the computer while this completes. Finally, be prepared to wait a while for it to complete.. depending on how large your harddrive is. My harddrive is 60 gigs, and takes around 5+ hours to scan.

After running scan disk, you should now use the Defragging option. This takes out the fragmentation of data on your harddrive. You may need to reboot after using scan disk, in which case you should return to safe mode before defragging. In order to defrag, please do the following:

1. Make sure you have done scan disk already.
2. Click the Start button.
3. Choose programs -> then Accessories -> System Tools -> and then Disk Defragmenter.
4. Choose the drive you wish to defrag and click OK.

Again, do not run any other programs until this is complete. Also, be ready to wait a while for it to finish.

This may not help you, but it is certainly worth a shot and may make other things run better in the process. Good luck and tell us how it goes. :)

pffft when i had winME, it was even more stable than some of my win2k boxes. i think i went 2 months without restarting it once.

but with all the new advancements of the xp-pro SP2, feature wise i think it beats ME in value to use.

Um whats your problem Legin? Just because Hawkburn stated that others might tell that dude to upgrade to xp doesnt meant you should not state whether Hawkburn could have a career in technical support who the hell are you? Ever consider the fact that people who post here are young to?

some people who post here are 14 years old etc, so you cant go and judge someone and besides hawkburn was just giving his opionion like you were to. So next time remmeber that not everyone are adults here or have the same level of computer knowledge that you may have.

And if by chance you come back with a smart remark while I Am not here go ahead.
Just remember I dont give a damn what someones post is as long if they help others.

peace
and plenty of ju ju beans that someone i know would usually say and shet

I dont want to turn this into off-topic nonsense because (apparently) dimeslime has a real problem (though it seems extremely minor...just dont update Windows if its a problem...Ive never updated).

But saying "I cant help you, Ive never used WinME but I hear its gay. Switch to XP" is just...lets say "not at all helpful" and leave it at that. Somebody who cant launch the updates, and has problem with certain message boards while using Windows ME does not require a new OS. A new browser solves the message board problem, and the updates arent necessary, but he can probably launch them if he keeps trying.

Fine, he likes Windows XP. I think Alpha Centauri is the greatest PC game, Fire Pro Wrestling D the greatest console game, I like big sandwiches, and they should have never cancelled that show Mystery Science Theater 3000. But simply stating random personal preferences of yours doesnt solve the problem.

My solution, which was actually beneficial, costs him $0.00

Hawkburn's solution, which I dont think would have solved anything, costs him $150

xp is free if you download it off of p2p

You must be confused. Windows XP is copyrighted software from the Microsoft corporation. What youre suggesting is getting the warez version. This is a file sharing forum, not a warez forum. Its people like you who give file sharing a bad name. This forum is for discussions about...oh I dont know...sharing personal photos of family vacations, maybe some MP3s that your garage band did and didnt copyright, nude photos of your girlfriend, etc. Legal file sharing. Thats what everybody on this board uses p2p for, sans a few bad apples like you. Consider yourself reported to the mods.
