Well, the standard for many people is LAME. however, LAME in itself will not rip your CDs. youll need an actual ripper that uses LAME. the two most popular, and in many people's opinion - Best, are E.A.C. (Exact Audio Copy) and CDex.
I Personally would go with EAC due to some more advanced ripping features, but CDex is a little more simple. Either way, you'll end up with audio virtually indistinguishable from the actual CD, but at much lower bitrates.

CDex: http://www.cdex.n3.net/
happy encoding

If either of those are too hard (they shouldn't be, but just in case) AudioGrabber is easy as riding a tricycle.

well i downloaded EAC and when i tried to encode the cd to my hard drive into .mp3's it only told me it could turn them into .wav's so i went into the FAQ and read that i needed to have LAME on the same folder as EAC so i went and downloaded LAME and extracted it to the same folder where EAC is and still i cant get it to encode the music into mp3's. am i missing something incredibly obvious here?

Make sure you've enabled it to use LAME or else it won't do anything.
See the enclosed picture for what your own compression settings should be at.
