I have a couple of questions and problems, and any help would be appreciated...
1. I recently got cable internet and I have a Linksys PCI-Adapter card so I can get connection from the router downstairs. How do I set the port that I get information from?
2. I downloaded Shareaza 2.1, and I tried downloading a file. When I look in transfers it hasn't even started the download, it says pending. I waited for about 20 minutes but the download never started. What's wrong?
3. Will I get busted for downloading music on Shareaza. Does the RIAA go after everybody or just people that offer or download a ton of music?
Thanks for your help. I might have more questions later.

I don't download music with p2p apps. anymore until 3rd generation p2p apps. that can provide more privacy! Yes, you can get busted using Shareaza to download music. However, you can still download mp3s using Internet Radio & RipCast. It is still legal.

Okay, ill help you here.
To set the port information, you have to log into the router's firmware (The router should come with an IP addy that you type into any browser and it will let you in, but some may have passwords). To set the port info, do as I said before and look around. I dont know too much about linksys routers, but they are all pretty much the same.
If its pending, that means there arent any computers that you can connect to. Some people set it so they only recieve a certain amount of connections at a time. Some people dont even let you download stuff without a trade or permission.
As for being sued by the RIAA, if you live in the US, yes you will be at risk. If you live in the great white north (Canada), you wont have a chance of being sued.
Anyway, there ya go! Welcome to ZP!

How do you find the IP address? I thought I found it but when I typed it in it couldn't find the page. Also, is there a way to download music/movies in the US without getting sued? Is there something that can stop people from seeing that you are downloading stuff?
Thanks again.

Plug the router in and you should have internet access. Go into the router administration area (read the manual for the IP) and add ports for shareaza that you need. Bittorrent works for me through the router, and at breakneck speeds to boot. You will often get a LowID if you use ed2k without port forwarding though.
2. I downloaded Shareaza 2.1, and I tried downloading a file. When I look in transfers it hasn't even started the download, it says pending. I waited for about 20 minutes but the download never started. What's wrong?
no sources probably. search for something really new and popular just to test, and make sure you're connected.

I download a lot of music, but most of the stuff I like is foreign or non-RIAA like techno. I also download assloads of anime, which is legal here in the US. You always run a risk, but the chances are on your side. If you share a lot of popular stuff (especially if it's diverse, like rap country pop etc) and it's your unlucky day, you have good chances of being caught. If they download it from you, then you can "get the letter". If you do get a letter (not a subpoena), ignore it and hope that it goes away.
If you get the letter you can still download because they aren't watching you or spying, they just noticed you once in a crowd.
I have some music with NO uploads ever, but I still share it.
Shareaza also has blocked many known RIAA and MPAA Ip addresses if it makes you feel any more secure.

How do you find the IP address? [of the router]
for winxp go run> cmd> ipconfig> the default gateway is the routers ip address
for win9x go run> winipcfg> select the adapter your using if there is two> default gateway again.
just type that address into your browser and 1st thing you should do is change your password
