Here's an interesting, yet (as far as I can so far tell) undeveloped invention idea for a product I wouldn't mind owning...

A crystal ball like device with a three dimentional pointer within it, of which is always pointing towards the moon reguardless of wether it is day or night. Could be controlled using elctromagnets connected to a gyro within a glass or plastic globe surrounded by several electromagnets used to control the direction of a pointer contained within, which would be guided by a computer chip. The entire device would powered by a rechargeable battery. Feel free to post comments, and/or steal the idea and get it to store shelves first. :) I think the concept is kinda right, now it's just a matter of getting a functional prototype made.

Better yet, make a whole series of crystal balls all pointing to different stars in the sky. Sell them like Beanie Babies and make a fortune out of the stupid - heh!

No, serious - what's such a crystal ball good for? I've never felt the urge to know where the moon is at any given moment. Why does it matter where that freaking rock hovers anyhow?

Fishing By The Moon
The Moon exerts a gravitational pull on the tides, the oceans, the air and the soil. Small creatures must work against such fluctuations in their environments and this makes them use up energy. This energy must be replaced by food. Feeding times therefore are in synch with patterns of the orbits of the Moon. When the Moon is Full, energy expended is greatest, and small creatures come out to feed. Bigger creatures come out to feed on the smaller, and even bigger creatures come out to eat them. The result is a general feeding time which translates into a best fishing and hunting time. The Maori Fishing Calendar is identical to the Canadian Rockies Hunting Calendar, Australian Aboriginal lore and the traditional teachings in Asian, Eastern and African hunting and fishing-based cultures. It seems that the world over, humans have noticed that out in the wild, the Moon controls best food-gathering times. We can all fish around in the kitchen cupboard for a tin of sardines. But to get the real thing, fresh, you need to observe these simple rules.

Time of month
Fish bite best around full and new moons, and bite well but to a slightly lesser degree around the first and last quarter phases. For best results, allow a day or so on either side of and including these phase positions. e.g May 19, 2004 was the New moon and chances of excellent fishing would have been between 18th-21st. Also fish tend to be out there in good numbers just before bad weather. This is because turbulent weather tends to churn up new crud that small creatures like to feed on, whether on land or at sea. And fish are curious creatures, which is why they are so attracted to jiggling bait on a hook. Then there’s perigee, when the Moon is closest to earth in about 27 days, and apogee when Moon is furthest away. Fish either side of both of these days for coastal fishing, because over perigee the fish won't come in close. They appear to have some fear of getting sand in their gills due to the action of the bigger waves. Perigees send fish into deeper waters out at sea, so if fishing from a boat expect to use longer traces. Apogee can bring extreme calm or turbulence because the Moon is being acted on the most by earth's gravity instead of the other way around as in perigee.

Time of day
The midmoon is the best, when the Moon is in the sky over north or directly underfoot on the opposite side of the earth. The second best time is when the Moon is on the horizon either at moonrise or moonset. .

I got a better idea

Harness the light from the moon to create LUNAR ENERGY!

I have to agree with the others, Having a crystal pointing to the moon is a waste of money/electricity/crystals/etc...

My reply to all three of you is pretty simple. I think that 1. Rather then create a whole set that has a different device pointing to a different star, make them programmable so you can set what they point at. It's a great idea for all those people who bought a star and want to know where it is at any given time especially for the customers who can't see the star they purchased because its view is blocked out by the light of the sun. 2. Artistic expression. 3. I'm just curious. I like to know where the big pile of dirt up in the sky is at a moments notice. I'm placing it under the personal reasons category. As for "Lunar Power" it's a great marketing gimic for all the solar companies that already exist. Good show matey. Although, I do believe that lunar power is technically classified in the "wave/tidal energy" catagory - this doesn't mean solar can't be called lunar power though - hmm... technically, once again, lunar is known as "reflected solar energy". eh oh well.

Other notes... Technically, the "buy a star" market is seperate from the "name a star" market. Yep, all those people got to name a star. Unfortunately, they can't claim they own it. :) Also, has anyone claimed ownership of the sun yet? I'm hoping to get a middleman position on the energy crisis.

Take care...
