Hi Guys,
I have some questions regarding p2p file-sharing...
I have used Kazaa sometime ago and I was very happy with the performance because the movie, mp3 downloads were extremely fast (I am using 1.5Mbps cable). Typically, I can download a 650MB mpg movie (from the time I search till the time I can view) within 24hrs. For mp3 downloads, the entire ordeal takes only minutes. However, I stopped using when they started charging membership fees.
I then tried emule, edonkey, bit-torrent and sharazaa but I am very disappointed because it takes months to download a single file because the source is either offline or I am in an extremely long queue.
I wonder whether this is a common experience or was it because I don't know how to use the software properly? I'll usually use my PC for about 3hrs daily and I'll off it if I don't see any download happening... Is this ok?
Thanks in advance,
Cheers, MC

Are you behind a router?
The difference between the ed2k/gnuttela2/fastrack network and the bittorent 'network' imho is that in the former you search for a particular file that could very well be not very popular but on the later you can easily look up files that are very popular. The other thing is in all these 'p2p' apps especially bittorent and ed2k it takes a while to get warmed up be it finding sources or trading data. In summary if your behind router figure it out, if you are wanting unpopular files stop and find popular files, stoping your download half way through will not double your download time it will probably.. i dont know.. quadruple it.
I have a very comparable connection to you and I get movies (700 and 1400 variety) in under a day easily.

Hi Whistler,
I don't think I am behind a router as I am directly connected to the ISP through cable unless you are referring to my broadband/cable router. But as far as I know, I constantly see other users downloading my files in shareazaa, hence I guess my network config should be ok...
>>stoping your download half way through will not double your download time it will probably.. i dont know.. quadruple it.
I usually searched for a file and leave it to download while I surf or work on my PC. However, it rarely starts downloading, and even if it does, it'll download a few Kbytes and stop again. Therefore, whenever I finish my work on my PC, I'll shutdown to save electricity since NO file-transfer is going on.
Do you mean I should leave my PC on over-night(or 24x7) so that I can stay(and advance) in the queues?
Thanks :)

Thanks ferrarimodena360,
I tried Kazaalite before and I remembered I can't find the files (using Kazaalite) I was downloading with Kazaa before. I can find those files with Shareazaa, just can't download or take months to download... sigh

I'm just going to say OMG.
As far as i know, if you quit, you have to start from the end of the queue again! No wonder it is taking so so long.
Btw, with the computer screen off, the computer doesn't use that much more than a lightbulb anyway, so its hardly worth doing at all.

Pff, I don't leave my pc on all night, and I still can download files pretty quicly using bittorrent or Ares. Shareaza is a different matter however. I hardly use it anymore because of the queues.

Brother man, you said your not behind a router except your cable router lol
This is part of whats killing your speeds, you need to go into your router setup page and
forward the appropriate ports. It would still work if you did not, just poorly
Good luck and hope you figure it out :fire
On a side note if you liked Kazaa try ares its pretty much the way kazaa was in its glory

Thanks moneoa, I tried Ares last night and yes it is the same as Kazaa but seems like the downloads are slightly lesser as I was unable to find as many videos as i used to.
I would like to use shareazaa if possible because I can find most(if not all) the downloads i require through shareazaa. And shareazaa is also a bittorrent client as well isnt it? I'll try to "forward" the ports in my router setup and see how it goes with shareazaa.
But I have this issue with shareazaa is that it reserves the space for the entire file before the download completes and this wastes alot of diskspace. For example, if i am downloading a file 1GB size, once shareazaa starts downloading the file, it'll create the FULL 1 GB file in my disk even if the download is only partial. How do you get around this problem?
Thanks again.

what do you think edonkey/emule does?
oh yeah-- that exact same thing
some people are too impatient/lazy to use p2p
i think tower records is more your speed
when you get something for free, does it make sense to whine about how fast?

I am not asking for sympathy just asking if there are better ideas to get the work done in a _better_ way. I am sure there are many people out in the same predicament as myself.
Thanks for your _insightful_ comment, but i would appreciate you keep your 2cents worth to yourself.

Part of your problem is people like you who have a file that others want and they only stay on for a short amount of time. I am constantly having souces come on and then off in a realtively short amount of time. So it takes me forever to get anything because alot of sources don't stay on long. Think about it. You are doing the same thing to someone else when you shut your machine off while someone is trying to download from you. With the queue system you really have to stay on for a long time if you want to upload/download anything of any signifigant size.

Thanks ALL, I've resolved the problem.
There were actually 2 problems:
1) ISP blocking port 4662
2) DHCP giving me diff IP-address which foils my port forwarding for my SMC7004VBR
What I did:
1) Removed my "router" (router to me is CISCO which supports routing protocol:BGP, IGRP etc, not this proxy switch!) and I connected directly to my cable modem from PC
2) Ran emule plus and saw "lowid" problem again.
3) Changed my ports to some other values.
4) Shutdown emule plus then ran it again. This time I see a highid!
Till now, I concluded my ISP may be blocking the ports.
5) Put back my "router" and connect to my PC.
6) Added ports forwarding to "router"
7) Emule plus says "port unreacheable"
8) I checked my ip-address and realised it changed because of DHCP
9) Changed IP-address to static
10) restarted PC, voila! It worked!
Cheers!

Shareaza & eDonkey/eMule reserved space on your hard drive to your hard drive from been corrupted, and keep the files been transfer between users healthier!
To improve my transer rate, I also remove bad/dead servers on my list often so sources are been updated often. Hope this help! Happy downloading :-)

Perhaps you have minimal sources for the files you are trying to download. You can check file availability on P2P networks at http://www.swarmz.net. Just search for the name of the file you are looking for and you will be provided with a list of available files, which will contain availability and last seen values. If the availability is low or the last seen date is a long time ago it could mean that the file you are trying to download is no longer widely shared.

Seems like bit-torrent is very popular. I used it before but somehow unable to find the required films I want. I understand bit-torrent is a different kind of file-sharing technology as in we have to search for the bit-torrent links in websites rather than in the file-sharing clients like shareazaa and emule...
Anyone knows a good place to find cool downloads for movies and manga?
Thanks.

Try www.suprnova.org
or www.torrentreactor.net
also www.btsites.tk has a list of sites you can go to for whatever your taste is, movies, TV, anime, warz, etc. There are even speciality sites for star trek or X-files.
Also you can try isohunt, pirates of the UK, pirates bay, or you can join a community like phoenix torrents, hawkies-world, file soup, or digital update. If you can't find what you are looking for, let me know and I can post the URL.

Hi Guys,
I have a new problem now. I realised my network connection will go down after downloading for a few hours. I need to reboot my cable modem and my SMC router in order to bring the internet connection up again.
If my PC, modem and router were up the whole day just doing normal surfing, I wont experience since a problem. This problem only starts when I have been downloading and using alot of bandwidth with emule.
My suspicion is that my ISP is dropping the network connection if a certain connection has exceed a certain amount of network usage even though I am subscribing to a "unlimited usage" plan.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance...

Why don'tyou just UNHOOK your router and go direct from cable to PC whenever you want to download from P2P? It seems like that router somehow is giving you the problems!

I usually leave the PC on in the day before I leave for work. During the day, my parents will surf from their PCs...
Hence I can't disconnect the router because there are other PCs using the internet as well.

Sounds like a problem i have with bittorent where i reach a certain number of connections and then it wont take any more; effectictively stopping all new internet activity such as browsing the web, mind all current connections work fine, so i just live with it. I cant tell whether this is caused by my router or win98 as it doesnt do this for my home computer with a router and winxp.

I guess the easiest way to test is leave my PC overmight with direct connection to the cable modem(bypassing the router) and see whether the connection "drops" again.
Thanks guys....
Any advice is welcome!

Hi All,
I removed the SMC router and connected my PC directly to the cable modem last night. As expected, the link dropped after about 2 hours of downloading at 25~35KB/s. I guess that was the limit my ISP gave for each connection (even though I'm subscribed to an unlimited usage plan).
Pls let me know if my deduction is wrong.
In order to get around this problem, I guess I need to monitor my internet connection (using a ping-script) and get a "remote power switch" to reboot my cable modem if my pings fail for more than 10mins continuously...
Any advise is welcome.

If you are using BT or Emule, or a similar program, you have to make sure the ports the program use are open, or else you will get slow connections.

go to office max, thay usually have 160 Gig drives for around $120. even with older computers using the 137gig limit you still have a massive hard drive storage, dont forget to grab a second for the slave ide drive.
If nothing else, when done, burn it to a 4.7G dvd drive. wich you can get for around $70
in a few years we should be in the Tara drive range

I'm basing my answer on just what you've said here WITHOUT reading any other replies in this thread.
However, I stopped using when they started charging membership fees.
You are probably using regular kazaa or a 'kazaa gold' or some other 'pay for kazaa software' also known as 'scamware' or a scam because they are decieving you into purchasing something that's free.
Do not pay any attention to anybody else recommending you a version of kazaa lite...in particuliar pay no attention to 'klite tools' or 'nsane' who will try to get you to use their version of kazaa.
I have the ONLY version you will need...when and or if it ever isn't able to connect to access the 'kazaa network' also known as 'fasttrack' I will then look for something else.
I will have to find a way to get you the only true version of kazaa lite in existence..all others are scams or junk.
This will most likely solve your other problems and make those posts or points moot (meaning they won't matter if u can still use kazaa for free like u wanted)
However I may examine the other points in you post at a later time and educate you for your own personal good and the good others.
that's all I have to say for now. I'll find a way to get you the correct version later.
