<from a friend>

New Referencefile for Ad-Aware

"With this update, FlashTrack and NetRadar detection has been added to the referencefile.
The release number is 016-16-05-02."

Download it from Lavasoft (http://www.lavasoft.nu/) or if you have RefUpdate installed you can update that way.
If you don't have RefUpdate I would recommend downloading it.
It's small, free and makes keeping Ad-Aware's reference files current a lot easier.

Adaware works. Trust me!

Ad-Aware is the best adware scanner there is,
Users should also get and use a "good" trojan scanner as well esp. if you use a "crack" on any software you download, then again the trojan can be inserted into "any" EXE file, I know this from past experience and just want to alert any New users out there who are just starting out so they might not have the same problems. Remember that most Trojan proggies are fairly invisible and you might not know you got one until its too late

A friend of mine asked me to come over and look at his computer. He experienced slow performance and other problems. I ran the updated version of Ad-Aware 5.83 and it found 183 occurances of spyware/adware/etc! Is that a record?

Ad-aware rocks! :sw

Well, I've got Adaware Plus, which I quite like. But what I don't understand is why I continuously pick up Doubleclick if Adwatch is running.

Before the Ad-aware Forums went down 2 weeks ago for repairs, there was alot of talk about this.
Adwatch only detects a cookie, it dosn't block them.
You need a program like CookieWall, it is Free and it works great.

What is the difference then between Adaware and Adaware Plus?

As for the cookie sentinels, of which I'm aware, my understanding is that yes I can load a cookie sentinel up, but then I'd only have a headache getting around on the net. I don't see how you can block cookies and not be constantly tripped up all the time. I've got a lot of discussion forums, for example. They use cookies. True, I could still get in and do my thing, but not as smoothly.

I'm not sure the trouble would be worth it. The trouble I take to get rid of unwanted cookies that Adaware finds is probably less. Hopefully cookies don't cause problems for my computer for the short time they're on it, before I remove them.

Regardless, Thanks for the comment and info.

I can beat that. Ad Aware removed 231 pieces of spyware from my computer when I uninstalled Morpheus (with bde)!

Arby:
CookieWall will let you control the Cookies.............
You have 3 choices..........
1-Always accept cookie
2-Temporary accept cookie
3-Always delete cookie

This way you can keep the cookies you want saved.
Don't knock it till you try it.

Actually, I downloaded/ installed Cookie Wall right after I posted my previous post. I like it. But I have no idea what to do with the majority of cookies that the prog shows me. Obviously I got rid of anything with 'sex' in it. (I like naked women. What can I say?) And I left (mostly in 'temp' but a few in 'never remove' or whatever) what seemed safe, namely stuff from sites like Lavasoft, Wilders and forums and other sites I visit. A lot of stuff I could only guess at.

Cookie Wall is a great prog, clearly, but it's utility is considerably less for those like myself who don't know by sight exactly what every cookie presented means. I'm new to the prog, so perhaps I will find more info on it that I can read. But that won't help if it's all techie jargon, which is usually the case with this stuff.

Later...

Just config it to propt every 30 sec....and save cookies that popup right after you login on a site to save your password.

Yes, I didn't know what I was doing when I first got it either,
it will be a little touch and go, untill you get used to it.

Ad-Aware is a great program, just run the scan and what ever it finds, you can choose to keep/ignore/delete/whatever..

Ad ware plus has Ad Watch included, which is basically a spyware shield (much like an anti virus shield). So all these spyware cookies will be blocked if you have it running :D

I do agree that Ad-Aware is a great program, but it is never too safe. I also use the program Spybot - Search & Destroy and it a great program. It ususally catches things Ad-Aware doesn't and don't take very long to scan your computer unlike Ad-Aware which seems take forever(no I don't have a slow computer..I have P3-1Ghz Dell).

...I use Spyblocker 4.75 ...it blocks most adds and spyware BEFORE they get on your computer AUTOMATICALLY.
( note: there is version 5.0 out - it is the same program-but for only 30 day trial).
Look on Winmx or Gnutella for 4.75 or surf the web for version 4.75.
What it dosn't catch.. Ad Aware / or / Spybot 1.0 cleans quite nicely.

Window Washer 4.5 also works great ..and provides extra security and cleaning features.... too bad it costs money. It also is out there on Gnutella and others for gratis.

There is a browser function that allows you to block or allow cookies, and remember them. I use that and never had a single spyware cookie detected by Ad Aware, so I see I don't need Ad Aware Plus.

Are you using Mozilla wesr? If you told it not to accept cookies from those sites they won't be accepted anymore. That's probably not it because you would probably remember that.

Removes everything YOU want. :bling

Gives options "like" Back Up :tilted

If it contains spyware and such and it won't work without it, why would you want it ??????? :finger

My two cents

I highly recommend spybot, it does things adaware cannot do, it has better backups, and an overall more powerful user interface

get it at http://security.kolla.de/

spybot even gets rid of some virus's and clears usage tracks

(about the record, i ran it on a friends, it hit over 200 after searching half the registry, and locked the program up, it gave me a german error message, now beat that....)

Great then.
at least winmx dont got spyware. Or no ability to talk. OR no files. OR NO optional or unoptional porn. OR at least it don't suck, unlike morpheaus, kaza wtv., spyware, 100 return results suck, unlike napster. Which rocked, and if you want to not use multi download use old version of winmx. If you want to wait a week, for a movie, use edonkey, if you like ads. use whatever you like then. I likewinmx. It has always rocked. WHenn they screwed up the newer verisions i justemailed em. They still have these new bugs, which i can't figure out. Like a download startin, then stopping. But I beleve the abiltity to connect has goten better, and it has not been reported wether the 10 people in que for 1 stinking song your looking for is the new bunch of leechers' traders, or just winmx's fault. Or, some weird shortage, or overpowerage of new people, and LOTS of downloads.
WInMx rocks, y are you here in a winmx forum, talkinga bout kazaa, you already know we know it sucks.?...

umm, last time i checked this IS NOT at winmx forum, its for spyware/adware which we were talking about

and why would you not want multi source downloading, it makes things go faster and more reliably, i would stick with the newer versions

i just recently installed winmx 3.31, so far, i think its a vast improvement over the last time i used it (2.x, i think like 2.7), there are more results than on kazaa because it doesnt restrict how many results you get, but i was appauled by the amount of queueing, its gotten worse, i dont think kazaa sucks, i really like it

(if i had the time i would argue some more, like kazaa can now return a wopping 200 results, lol)

Ad-Aware rocks, so does SpyBot SD, I use them both. One thing I haven't seen anyone else mention though: WebWasher. I've been using it for a year and a half, I never see pop-ups or banner ads, it also blocks cookies, referer info, web bugs, all kinds of stuff, very configurable, and you can set it to not filter certain sites.
