yes mIRC is a very handy program for downloading files, however... some users argue it is too hard to comprehend due to the fact that it is pure text

Not usually bluefungis256, I've heard of it usually having excellent speeds depending on what host they hack up.

To put it across in a straight way, Yes, one can d/load files using `mirc' (and other irc clients too), but tell me, why will one waste his/her bandwidth so that you can receive files. The simple rule of the thumb is that `as you seed, so you reap' and the same stands true for `p2p' and other file-sharing options (like `ftp' where you have upload/download ratios). The best option is `p2p' using `bittorrent' and not others like `emule' etc. (you can very well find yourself in queue no. 1854). Hope I've been able to get across. Cheers & sunshine... Pupudada

i like u was clueless about irc, and how it can be used as a p2p application,
i came to know about irc thru this guide http://www.slyck.com/irc.php , its a very good guide and will help u getting started
--> IRC is not as simple as conventional connect > search > download kind of p2p's
--> You will find the newest of releases here, way before being available on any other p2p, probably second only to newsgroups,
--> If ur not too "techy", learn IRC by first leeching (only downlading), and then eventually switch to sharing as well, thats what i did
Party On
also recommended is revconnect , simple connect > search > download P2P :D http://sharereactor.revconnect.com/

With mIRC, you're basically back to the old Napster days, in which you get a file from one person. If that person is sending out a file to someone else, you'll be forced to sit in their queue until they are done. With any IRC send, you'll be waiting much long than on a P2P network. Sometimes its a tradeoff though since the integrity of files on IRC networks are much better.

get in a decent channel with fast bots and they send files to 10 or so ppl at the same time and max my bandwith out for the duration of a 2gb send of one file

I would disagree that you find the new releases WAY before any other P2P.
Earlier? Certainly. But only by at most a few days, and in that time you probably won't have the file downloaded anyway because of the queues.
BT is making great strides.
