RIAA and Bittorrent

Is the RIAA monitoring torrents. And if so how do they do it, because they must be uploading it too.

Im not really sure about the RIAA but they dont have to be uploading anything. They can set BT to not share any bandwidth and then just log all the IPs connected to the torrent. The MPAA is monitoring BT sites. I've already recieved a letter.

The MPAA is taking a different approach from that of the RIAA. They are merely warning people to stop downloading movies and remove them from your hard. They depend on ISPs cooperating and sending out the warning letters.


The RIAA is actually filing lawsuits against people. The burden of proof should be greater, and in fact is. However, the threat of a drawn out lawsuit is enough to intimidate most people into settling out of court. Legally, they would have to be able to prove you are uploading music, and that would require them to actually download from you. In theory the logging of listed IPs really doesn't prove much. In practice it can get them a subpoena and the threat of a lawsuit, which you would most likely settle rather than bankrupt yourself trying to fight their army of lawyers. They say they are only going after people who share large amounts of music, so since BT only shares individual torrents, one at a time, they have no way of knowing if you are sharing anything other than the one file. Does this mean they are ignoring BT and not suing people using it? Highly unlikely.


BT is a pretty good client, but it is inherently insecure for sharing questionable files. Use it at your own risk, and know that that risk is pretty large...................
