Has anybody actually gone all the way with RIAA in the courts? I have only heard people settling out of court. Wonder what the outcome of such a battle would be? I live in the UK - anybody know if I am at risk anymore than receiving a letter from my ISP and having my service cut off? Could always just sign up with another ISP if that happened but I dont really want to pay thousands of pounds to ruthless, monopolistic capitalists who already overprice their products to a stupid degree. I am with a small ISP (Zen) - not sure if their policies include backstabbing their customers to the authorities

As far as I know everyone has settled out of court. No one has had the balls to fight them yet.

The climate is very different here chelski. The BPI chose to keep the UK out of the IFPIs lawsuits in Europe, which has to say something. They keep saying that they will wait and see, but keep reminding us that it is an option for them.

If and when it does happen here, the debate will have to be different. We have different privacy laws and no fair use laws to discuss. We just have to wait and see. The BPI are pleased with the growth of legitimate services and the press is incredibly bias towards the industry. Have you read the reports in the newspapers, and even trade magazines? They either make out file sharing as the devil, or it doesn't get a mention. The papers just parrot out BPI press releases. I don't see why the BPI would want the press to start questioning them - a likely effect of lawsuits.

As for your ISP cutting you off, that could be a bit of a risk. Some people have got letters. You could try argueing it with your ISP. Say they probably caught you sharing fakes or something along those lines.

Here's the deal with the riaa lawsuits, they are way cheaper to settle because the riaa attorneys have made every attempt to delay civil proceddings leading to greater legal costs for the defendant. Unless you can find an attorney like me who'll do p2p cases pro-bono, your looking at an easy 10 grand worth of legal fees within the first two pretrial hearings and if the thing goes to trial around 5,000 dollars a day plus fees, like experts, and any other expensive evidence you would need to show to win a case of this caliber. luckily for those in massachusetts a few of the good men and women in my law firm a judge have managed to delay any and all p2p related cases for months and the judge seems sypythetic towads the modern p2p user or little guy.

I think rich people have enough money to burn so they prolly buy thier music most of the time. Its the little guys that need to watch every dime and would rather not spend an obscene 18.99 on one CD with only 2-3 good songs.
