i remember reading a while back that there is a program that will scan your hardware and tell you specifially what devices you have (brand and model etc) which is really useful for pre-made computers like HP's with no driver or recovery cd's.
any help would be appreciated immensely.

Glad to help, and just so you know to the best of my knowledge krell is still using aida 32. I saved the info from my pc, and sent it to him before I installed xp the first time, so he could let me know if he felt the install was good to go. sheesh i owe him a lot.

I use AIDA32 which is available for download @ FileForum (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1033800563/1)
Another program that is the successor of AIDA32 is Lavalys (http://www.lavalys.com/) Everest (http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=1). You can find a brief desciption at FileForum (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1086844970/1)
Hope this helps some ;-)
