Hi All
Open for comments - I've just purchased a wireless card for my laptop, started my computer and bingo! - I'm connected to the Internet at some outrageous speed too. I'm obviously connecting via someone elses wireless connection (probably my next door neighbours). Is this normal? Does he know?
Am I anonymous???

Your being a very bad net-citizen. No, your not anonymous. You'd show up as whoever's connection your on. Get your own internet access and stop being a freeloader. Unless its a free hotspot.

Yeah, you're connected to someone else. Either clear it with the person or get your own connection.

Yes, I could find out where you are located and find you within minutes.
All you would need to do is use a program or device to check the signal strength, and walk torwards the direction with increasing signals.
Unless the ID clearly states FREE WIRELESS something to that effect or they told you that you may use theirs, then that just isn't cool.
Go tell them their wireless network is accessible and show them how to protect it instead of clogging up their network with your useless pornographic images and webcam traffic.

Most likely you are connected to you neighbors router. Your neighbor must not be using encription for the connection. Enjoy while it lasts

Yes, they can probably find out, but since their connection is wide open like that they probably don't know how to "fix" it (secure it) or don't care. They probably don't know how to find out you've been connecting to their wireless. It's the way it goes. We want things to work right out of the box, so they do, but they work for everyone. I've got my wireless locked down as much as it can be, so my neighbors aren't getting in unless they know what they are doing. I like knowing that I've got a couple of neighbors with wireless that's not secured, just in case mine goes down for some reason.

even if they don't know how to do it you should at least inform him about it, maybe he'll let you use it.

yeah tell him, you'll come off looking nice, rather than an ass if he finds out youve been using it
just "hey I got a laptop, and I found out youve got an access point thats unsecure. would you like me to help you secure it? mind if I use it? Anytime you need help, just ask me"... giving out free tech support now and then is a nice price for a free ISP.

OK - to hawkburn, mony burnz & especially omyn:
STOP being so presumptuous. I know it's not nice freeloading off someone else and yes I fully intend to tell my neighbour (I do know who it is). For your information I do have my own ISP set up, the question was to simply ask "hey, is this normal?"
So get off your high moral horses and stop making assumptions about people if you don't know the whole situation. Omyn - I DON'T deal in porn so shove your comments where the sun don't shine.

Don't let this give you a bad impression of our members, Hawkburn, OMYN are really good guys, they are just passionate about some things. I think McOvey has the best advice in how to approach the situation.

LOL! Screw you guys. If someone leaves their connection open, they're fair game.
I have a 21 decibel antenna hooked up to a D-Link wireless bridge and can piggy back on several different connections.
Who uses 4 megabits download day and night anyway? Gee. I thought ZP and P2P was all about sharing.

The game changes when it involves a finite amount of something tangible.

errr sharing knowingly and hijacking someones internet connection arent even in the same boat my friend.
What you say is cool is theft and I dont mean of the cool anti establishment kind
we pull with our file trading hijinks. Its the lame disrespectful type.
Only an asshole would use someone elses connection covertly to perform illegal
activities and put that person in liability. At least have some principle and do
it on your own shit and take resposibility for your actions.

Go for a win win situation. If they dont notice, tell them and see if they are willing to split the bill.
Cheap internet for both of you. Nice and fair too.

well before you do anything. download as much as possible and then tell them that they need to encrypt their internet.
