If you have $70 sitting around....buy a Phillips DVP-642 DVD player at your local walmart. It plays avi files....no conversion necessary.

If you want to play them in a DVD player, you need to convert them to MPEG2. Or buy the aforementioned DVD player.
If you simply want to archive them, just burn them as data files.

and the cool thing is, if you have one of those phillips DVD players....you can have an archive of files...that you can play in your DVD player.

It's kind of a bad idea to convert xvid avi's to dvd. It takes a lot of effort and produces crappy quality. You should:
a. Buy an divx/xvid standalone player (OR) connect your pc to your TV and play from your pc but view/listen through your home entertainment center.
b. Download dvd versions from jump and burn those instead

There's a guide here on Zeropaid. http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=21635. I haven't tried his method, so don't yell at me if it doesn't work.
The way I do it is:
demultiplex with mpeg tools in tmpgenc to split into audio and video
convert audio to 48000khz mp2, if needed, with besweetgui
convert video with tmpgenc to mpeg-2
multiplex new audio and video together with mpeg tools in tmpgenc
author to dvd with tmpgenc dvd author or ulead dvd studio

There are plenty of all-in-one avi 2 dvd conversion programs out there - some which allow you to change the format from PAL to NTSC even (normally really expensive). You may encounter unrecognized video codecs when attempting to convert but one of the following proggy's should allow you to do what you want.
Here a few of the ones out there:
Aare.AVI.to.VCD.DVD.SVCD.MPEG.Converter
AVSVideoConverter
Cucusoft_AVI_to_DVD_VCD_SVCD_MPG_Pro_Converter
Power.Video.Converter
SVCD2DVDMPG

assuming you actually have a dvd-r drive... you can easily use NeroVision Express to do it. I think you need to "purchase" a DVD-encoding plugin for it, but after that, you can just load up NeroVision Express, choose Make DVD, and follow the piss-easy wizard. It might not be as l33t as doing it all these other ways, but it works fine for me...

Sounds like you need to go to controll panel, Display, Settings, Advanced, Displays and where you see the TV settings click on the box with a circle in it. This will make both your monitor and TV your primary displays, so video will show up on both screens.

As you can see you have multiple options, however if you really want to convert to DVD then I suggesst using the TMPG method to make them into mpeg2 files and then using Ifo edit to author them into DVD's, It will take some time to turn them into Mpeg2's but once there, it takes but a few minutes to author a DVD with Ifo Edit.

Downloaded avi's? Nero version 6 will convert and burn it to DVD AUTOMATICALLY. You can also use a cheaper method and burn it to VCD using a regular CD. The files you download are usually not more than TV quality (Cams, telesyncs, etc) so a VCD in MPEG 1 is about the same quality. Nero will convert and burn it for you. You can go to www.afterdawn.com to download a trial verson of nero, but i recommend that you cough up the money for a full copy, it is well worth it. Fow what I hav saved by not going to marginal movies it has more than paid for itself.

Yep, i'd get Phillips DVP-642 DVD. I brought one last week and i must say it plays almost anything i throw at it. Uyou can take a bunch of AVI files bune them as data and play each movie on this machine. Well worth the $70, who wants to waste hours converting.

Nero for some reason sucks balls when I am trying to burn downloaded avi to dvds
I got better results with Roxio 6 or 7. Both worked just fine
