The much anticipated Windows XP Service Pack 2 is expected to be released this upcoming Monday. Microsoft estimates that 40% of UK users have automatic updates turned on. They state "We won't be at full capacity on Monday. We'll be throttling the number of users who can download it."

"We want to make sure that the customer experience is as good as it can be. Then by the end of the month users can order CDs from us totally free of any charge. You should see the size of our postage bill!"

XP SP2 is supposed to be the mother of all downloads. Be ready to download the official SP2 on Monday from Microsoft.

There's a download link where you can download it directly from M$ already out there. I tried it I think Thursday, and i was getting a steady 630 KBps.. so they have some bandwidth to spare :)

I am running it and it's not bad, I dont know what the problem is. It hasn't broken any of my applications, even older games run ok. Most of the security stuff can be disabled and it is intellgent. If you disable windows firewall, but you have anouther firewall running, it wont complain it detects it and no problems.

The download isn't to bad either, I have cable net, i started it, when to the post office and mcdonalds and it was done when i got home.

Well I wouldn't expect the download rate to be bad now. It's not officially out on Microsoft.com but on Monday I'm sure it will be much slower.

Janett999 - The link is up in the first post. I forgot to add "Full Story" at the end of the post. Click the link if your interested in reading the full story.

So you haven't had problems with multi-source p2p aps such as bt and emule? Are the problems that I have heard about unfounded....or are you saying that there are ways to tweak SP2 in order to get BT and emule to work properly?

Just wondering...and waiting on the general concenses.

There are ways to change the settings so that the patch works properly.

yes, there is a site where you can get a patch to allow 50 connections instead of the limited 10.

I have a version of that thingey that can be made to set your connections to unlimited in my shared folder. There's a hash for it on the Shareaza forums.

I work for The Art Institute of Vancouver-Burnaby (www.artschool.com)
part of the Education Management Corporations (www.edmc.com) chain
of post secondary schools called Ai.
Our systems administrator is getting ready to roll it out across the Vacouver campuses
and while testing found because of the REALLY jacked security in exchange for ease of use it just might slam the casual user.
On the corproate level at least on our network it was found to interfere with some business applications like office outlook and some other progs that might be used by big business, some covered by MS Support
where did you get your info?
do you have a link?
Indeed!
Outlook Express automatically downloads external content when you reply to a message or forward a message on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=883613)

Web server functionality may not work correctly after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=883607)

Pictures do not appear as expected, or you receive an error message when you open an HTML file on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=878461)

Messages in Microsoft Outlook are not sent immediately in Windows XP Service Pack 2
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=883606)

You cannot configure Windows Firewall settings or Security Center settings on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based client computer that is in a Windows Small Business Server 2003-based network (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=872769)
On the personal side most intermediate users and whatnot will be able to configure everything properly, the concern on the corporate side where alot of stuff might have compatability probs, this is why MS decided to let businesses and corporations opt out
of Sp2 during the launch phase as discussed here.

Temporarily Disabling Delivery of Windows XP Service Pack 2 Through Windows Update and Automatic Updates (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx)

So dirty is a strong word but I still reccomend you wait until they patch it a bit.
Sp1 had some bugs too if anyone can remember and as long as you know what
you are doing and have a firewall and AV you should be allright in the meantime. :error

I updated it a few days ago, its been working fine. The only minor anoyance is about outgoing TCP/IP limits, although there is a very simple fix for that. http://lvllord.de/ has a tool that ups the number. You can also through the command line raise the limit to over 16000000

do you have any links on how to free them up through command line?
For my home machine that was one problem marked by me as uncool
(as many of us have I am sure)
When I eventually DO slap the beast in my machine I will play with it for sure........
my computer you perverts
So even after they patch it a bit and I fall for the craze I will still probably tweak the shit out of it.

Do use... one at a time? If not, you might have less security than you are led to believe.

If you dont feel safe with your firewall, seek alternatives (http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=22434). Dont double and triple up.

Aaah, I didn't read into that very well then, did I :-P

I find it so common for users to install many firewalls, and it just kills me. So I assume the worst sometimes :-P.

lol this guy I talked to the other day has Z.A, Norton I.S 2004 and Mcafee java badness
all running concurently and he was asking me why some progs that connect to the net
were not working properly. I told him it might have to do with the three firewalls that dont like each other very much.
