Now we've got it - the security I mean. XP SP2 limits the number of connections to 10, because of "future threat from attacks like blaster and Sasser that typically spread by opening connections to random addresses."

Now you'll have snail2snail instead of P2P :ass
Or you'll start playing with your more immediate peers :love

Well, I've found a solution. It's a patch. You can download it at Windows.XP.SP2.(Service.Pack.2)-10.Connections.Limit.Patch.zip (ed2k://|file|Windows.XP.SP2.(Service.Pack.2)-10.Connections.Limit.Patch.zip|35778|cd3d3ee52661d 23888383ac03626cf71|) :green4

so, what does this patch do exactly? What does it change, and how is it changed etc.

Well I would use this, but the zip file is full of pro-Bush html as their headers for their nfo's. VERY unprofessional (at least in an underground world.. and most release groups are liberal.. the group is named "Bush" pssh.)

Here just take my word for it, its fucked, look here is some fucked up file you can download to do yourself a favour and fix it (go ahead why are you looking at me funny)
So go ahead and click this mystery link for some bullshit file you've never heard of
to fix the problem I had to tell you about.

Even if its only full of pro bush garbage do you really think its all that smart to download mystery files on the word of some anonymous poster on bbs.
Thats a good way to get duped friends.......

the number of connections is greater than 10. you must be confusing this numer with the number of simultaneous connections allowed for file and print sharing in windows (5 for home edition, 10 for pro).

>XP SP2 limits the number of connections to 10

No it does not.

Please do not talk nonsense about things you do not
understand. Please do not start new threads when
there are already several threads on the same subject.

>do you really think its all that smart to download mystery files
>on the word of some anonymous poster on bbs.

Exactly.

>you must be confusing this numer with the number of simultaneous
>connections allowed for file and print sharing in windows
>(5 for home edition, 10 for pro).

Don't jump to unjustified conclusions.

As we already covered in this thread yesterday (http://zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=22298) this is a limit on the number of
simultaneous attempts to open new connections.

This probably won't have much effect on filesharing programs.
Emule already has a limit on the number of new connections it
trys to open in a five second period, primarily to reduce
problem with poor quality NAT routers.

Internet worms constantly try to contact new ip addresses,
most of the ip addresses a worm try won't respond at all so
it has to wait until the connection times out. To scan
quickly a worm has to have lots of connection attempts
in progress. There is no reason that a filesharing program
can't spread out attempts to open connections over a few
minutes when it gets a load of new sources.

Semi-off topic question.
I don't use XP, but i heard that "pirated" windows XP users can't update? How's that enforced?

in service pack 1, they blocked two specific PIDs (you can view your PID in the System control panel). if you had one of those two PIDs, you couldn't install sp1. initially in sp2 they were going to block several more PIDs that are used by the volume license edition of XP (commonly called "corp" in the illegal world) because all of the legitimate PIDs that microsoft has handed out have all had the second section equal to 640, but 641-649 were also reserved for these licenses, but hadn't been assigned yet. they planned to block those PIDs since they were commonly created in keygens, and that would have knocked out several pirated keys. there were, of course, other keygens that can create the 640 PID keys...so it wouldn't have been very effective. the last i heard, microsoft has only continued to block the PIDs they blocked in sp1, and have not added any new blockings to sp2. i haven't had the chance to try out any pirated keys though, so i can't confirm this.

With SP2 released I decided it was time for a clean install of windows. I duly installed Windows XP and the "Network computers" service pack, then all my associated software. My torrents were flying at 60--85kB/s. When I was happy with the stability of the system I checked to see whether I was getting any EventID 4226 Logs. Which I duly was.

After applying LvlLords patch...No EventID 4226 logs but a noticeable slowdown in downloading speed.

has anyone else experienced a similar problem

Everyone I talked to who installed Sp2 and then patched it for whatever was ailing them
says it works like gravy. Its weird it would slow down after patching

have you, oh, I dunno, tried googling?

http://www.google.com/search?q=xp+tcp+ip+patch+sp2&sourceid=firefox

I don't recommend hacking OS system files.

I myself havent even installed SP2 yet and I have no intention of doing so. I havent heard many great things about SP2 yet all I have heard for the most part are people whining about download speeds after they installed it.

SP2 is the scapegoat for slow download speeds--it really has little to do with it.

SP2 only limits the connections to peers who XP thinks are not responding/aren't active...those are people you don't want to connect to anyway. In terms of filesharing, SP2 is merely weeding out the outdated client lists some of them maintain. SP2 shouldn't do anything to DL speeds.

If you need the SP2 fix get the fix from lvllord's site. http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=tools
