xp?

i am currently running windows 98se and am thinking of upgrading to xp. i was wondering if it is worth it and which version is best to get, home or pro?
also is the upgrade process easy to perform or a more complex matter?

i have windows 2000 pressional and i upgraded to xp but it kept killin the pc when i tried to start the pc
make sure b4 u upgrade that u meet the requirements of ram..memory and processor speed or u will encounter problems

Do not install WinXP on top of another version, do a clean install. A lot of people had problems, but if you do a clean install it run better than any other versions!

I would also get XP Pro Corporate version not XP Pro for individual, I think you can download a copy from a file sharing network but I don't know which one.

The differences between Home and Pro are mostly security related, although the biggest difference (for me at least) is that Pro has much advanced file sharing over a network, wheras with Home you have to stick all the documents you want to share in a special folder. (I'm not talking about P2P sharing, just basic networking using Explorer.) Also, Pro comes with IIS, which you would have to be insane to use anyway considering that Apache is a free download and IIS seems to be every hacker's favorite toy. The installer is not any different with Home or Pro as far as I have seen.

XP Pro Corporate is simply Pro with no activation built in. It's by far the most widely pirated due to this, although you can download utilities that will easily hack out the activation in the other versions as well. A pirated Corp. copy will supposedly not work with SP1, but we shall see.

I almost forgot to answer this one.

If you know what you're doing, no. I didn't lose a single file. Basically, I booted to DOS and renamed the Windows directory. Next, I renamed my Documents and Settings folder, and then installed. After the installer finished, I coppied back my old documents, programs (although many no longer worked, but that's normal) fonts, etc.

Office XP will run on Windows 98 and higher. Do you have a CD burner and a RW disc or a Zip Drive? Just backup your files and then format C: and do the clean install. If your computer will handle WinXP then yes, I'd say get it unless you need to use software or hardware that isn't XP Compatible. (I can't use my webcam anymore and had to buy a new printer) You can get around that if you dual boot Win9X/ME with XP. That's what I do on one of my computers.

:devil XP works great for me! I was running ME and was getting frustrated with the pc crashing all the time so I finally upgraded...I had to update some drivers for my devices but it wasn't a big pain....BUT I would not run XP on anything with less than 128mb of ram...As far as incompatible software it's been kinda hit and miss but there are patches for a lot of software not XP compatible...All in all, I'd say upgrade. XP runs faster on my PC and is damn near crash proof.

i use WinXP Pro and it works excellent, also the windows media player works excellent, alot better than previous version, especially the new WMP 9
