Hi
I just upgraded to 750kb broadband and want to dip into the world of dvd downloads im sick to death of paying over the odds for em. Ive used p2p software a lot over the years napster, file navigator, kazza and shareaza. Just for music and applications mainly i wouldnt say i understood the complexitys of them.
I really wanna download dvd's but i totally dont understand how its done how you get them to work on a player and how long a typical movie takes,
Can anyone give me a rough overview ?
Cheers

U'll have to download the actual dvd image, you can usually see the section in suprnova --> movies --> dvd-r or something. A dvd image is around 4,7 gb. With your speed i say it will take a day or more.

750kbs advertised speed?
Divid it by 8 then by 10....
8 is what you should be getting 10 is what you're likely to get.
BT is the best place for DVD-R copies.... Suprnova is ok, but you'll soon wish to move up, unless you become a leech. In which case most sites other then supr will ban your ass repeatedly if you continue to leech.
Leeching in the BT community isn't the same as on other networks that allow you to disable sharing, if you limit your upload to shit and remove files as soon as they complete without seeding..you're a leech...
I can't stand 'em.... supr is full of them and it shows... 15 seeds/120 leechers? Over at TB you see 300 seeds and 240 leechers on DVD-R copies...
Total Currents stats
Seeders 18,278
Leechers 6,791

im currently looking at newgroups for this very thing. OCnsidering the speed difference on newsgroups the extra time it will take you to get and unpack the files is worth it. Im still trying to figure this last part out but i downloaded 2.6g last night in 2 hours.

Right, i decided to upgrade my broadband to 1.5mb line. I downloaded the torrent file off supanova and tried to download ive had tonnes of problems bellow is a list of which programs i used and what the problem was :
Shareaza: Tracker down message, active download that never starts, and also really slow speeds of around 20kb.
ABC: god knows how i even use this, dragged and dropped a file got message : 11:16 problem connecting to tracker.
Bittornado - Error connecting to tracker connection refused,
Torrentstorm - unable to connect to tracker for scrape.
What on earth am i doing wrong ive tried several different torrent files and all of these programs can not work. Do i need to change some setting somewhere ? please please help
Cheers

All the same torrent? If so it just means the tracker is having problems...try another. :)

Make sure your firewall is allowing BT on it's ports, windows firewall is off, and if your using ZA that your allowing BT to act as a server.

if youre having problems connecting to trackers, youo probably have to open port 6969 tcp which is the one which establishes connection with the trackers. now as to the ports bittorrent uses for downloading they are 6881-6999, the first download would occupy 6881, the second 6882 and so on

Just registered over at TB to check it out for dvd-r, will stick with suprnova. They have a much wider selection of dvd-r over there.
TB = 22 dvd-r
Supr = over 300 dvd-r

Pretty much all TB's DVD-R's are new...if you read the FAQ you'll get what "Total Torrent Life" is...
Thats the only reason their selection can't compare. You get your files fast and always with tb...supr is a different story.
Plus.... Man On Fire was releaed on TB in it's true DVD R1 retail in July! It's release date is 9-14-04!
Supr can't compare when it comes to blowing release dates away either.

thanks to replica! its funny the grps that provide the media seems to get lost in translation a lot. its kind of odd to think that these awesome pre-store rips or copies are just available! they fall out of the sky and there they are lol.

TTL is Time To Live, not total torrent life. Maybe you should read the faq yourself.

I've tried grabbing a few DVDs from suprnova and it was just too damn slow. Might try it sometime when I have a spare week for my computer.

Really?? maybe you got unlucky Mels. Got a basic dsl connection, no cable or ultra high speed and downloading those dvd's usually takes no more than 24h.

Always am able to finish the torrents from supr. Yeah, I read the FAQ section. Slow downloads for newbies, upload ratios, being banned if your upload ratio is not high enough for their taste... I can get the same treatment on soulseek. Sorry CSSDUDE but these rules are a bit too much for my taste even tho I make sure I get a 1:1 ratio before i disconnect.
Thanks for the link, it's always nice to have extra sites :gj

Regulars refer to it as "Total Torrent Life". :P
Miss_Silver, they won't ban you, I've yet to see them ban someone even when they had a share ratio of 0.00. 238kb uploaded and gigs downloaded!
Not to say you should do this as once they see a pattern of new nicks and such you will get the boot....they're not as strict as it appears.
Give it a try and you'll never wanna go back.... after seeing copy after copy of way early Relpica releases up months before and weeks before it ever spreads to other bt sites... I was hooked.

TB = torrentbits.org
TTL = "The torrent's Time To Live, in hours. It means the torrent will be deleted from the tracker after that many hours have elapsed (yes, even if it is still active). Note that this a maximum value, the torrent may be deleted at any time if it's inactive."
