I would recommend the iRiver IHP-140. You get

- 40 gigs with an FM radio
- 16 hours battery life
- Mutil codec support (ASF, OGG, MP3, WMA, WAV)
- Recordable with internal & external mic,
- Sound quality far exceeds that of the iPod (in my opinion using Sennheiser PX200 headphones)
- leather case
- USB2
- No drivers required. Player appears as a drive on Windows 2000 & XP.
- Winamp M3U playlist support
- LCD remote control

My only gripes were the horrid brown case (which you could dye black if you wanted), & the main joystick functionality- iPods are much easier to navigate.

Basically this thing is the nuts and its substantially cheaper than the 40gig iPod.
