Hello, Folks. I just wanted different opions from all of you about eDonkey and Overnet. Are you all thinking to move to Overnet?

No, I dont think I will be moving, mostly because eDonkey is the original and is naturally faster. Plus, most of the sites for the downloading (sharereactor musicdonkey) are built for eDonkey. So i will be with the donkey for a long while to come :tilted

Me neither, the Donkey is still the best, why Jed M. developed Overnet in the first place still confuses me !? Whats that old saying?..

"if it aint broke, don't fix it...."

I like eDonkey too, and I'm glad to see people not moving to Overnet. By the way, if you are having a trouble connecting, make sure to get the latest server list and check your internet connection.

In Edonkey right click on the server list, select "get server list" and paste this url

enjoy..:)

Also if you are running XP make sure you disable that god-awful firewall...

I like the idea of Overnet that it is serverless. However, it doesn't have a lot of users yet!

It is still too early, they still need to improve the program's GUI. Today, most people wouldn't care to learn use command line version in a Window's environment.

eDonkey needs to be improved also but I will stick with this for now! eDonkey needs to improve on the way to handle upload slots. Most of my files are large & I have over 50 people in queue at any time I am online. If I can limit just 2 or 3 slots for people to download my files, they will get those faster. I am on ADSL with 128Kb/s upload limit, so I have to limit it to 120Kb/s (only about little more than speed 2 modems) otherwise I couldn't surf on the Internet at same time!

I believe in file sharing is better for p2p community. P2P file sharing rocks forever!!!

Overnet is better than eDonkey, but it does require Microsoft's .net SDK (which is free btw).

edonkey is better than overnet.

edonkey is full of holes that overnet didnt correct. overnet even added problems that donkey didnt have- chat has to hit the "send" key because the enter key doesnt work, download speed is controlled by upload speed- when one goes up, the other goes down.
but overnet needs a nealy 30 megabyte download of a java-like layer of code to work in windows. there is a second service pack out there and it is a pain to install and use.
donkey needs servers to find files, but once they are started, no server is needed for them to complete. overnet just sits there doing nothing.
donkey gets my vote.

Agreed. edonkey is currently better than overnet.

I've had no problems downloading or connecting, but overnet hogs resources and makes my system bog down.

The idea behind overnet is cool and all, but it definitely needs debugging.

I have had good success with Overnet .30. I am seeing speeds in excess of 50-100k download and I have my upload capped at 15k or so. It has over 53000 users right now and a ton of good quality video and programs. I have been sharing over 100 gigs of stuff on it since the original release. the .Net stuff sucks and crashes sometimes but not enough to detour me from it. Also after the first 10min or so of Overnet running you should see your system resources come back to normal. It will tweak them out for a bit at first start up.

Maybe it's my system, but overnet hogs it continuously---hours.
It performs fine; downloads fast; connects fast; searches ok.

I've noticed my disc drive runs heavily. It's intermittent, but very heavily intermittent. I'm wondering if it has something to do with my firewall, zone alarm. That process associated with zone alarm (vsmon) shows a high percentage of CPU usage when overnet is running.

If anyone else is using zone alarm and has any ideas how to fix this, don't even hesitate to post em.

ive used both edonkey and overnet, and i cant see any difference in the most important things e.g download speed, ease of use, file availability. the only pain with overnet is that it seems a bit of a resource hog, and like foreverboard says the .net framework has a tendency to crash when u exit the program. im gonna stick with edonkey fior just now, but am prepared to change to overnet when they get rid of the .net stuff

Overnet is the choise of course. Why stick with the old stuff if there's something new. And why is the .NET Framework such a problem sooner or later you will have to install it anyway because many new aplications will depend on it. For me it works better than edonkey, and I agree it's still in beta stages but even in beta it's better than edonkey. Anyway stick with the stoneage and use edonkey, and stick with the future and use overnet.

I believe mlDonkey allows you to connect to BOTH eDonkey2000 AND OverNet. Also, you don't have to install any .NET junk. I don't care what needs .NET I will NEVER have it installed on my system. It a program is built upon the .NET framework, then you can be gauranteed that I won't be using that program.

I believe mlDonkey allows you to connect to BOTH?

GoldenTequiIa it is obvious you are the same person as GQJT169. Why do you have two aliases and why are you posting in old threads asking stupid questions. I know this question is fake as it is irrevelant like the others ones were. The new edonkey also connects to both.
