Once upon a time there was a young singer from Gozo who won the Malta Song for Europe Festival in 1996 and fared respectably well as Malta's participant in the Eurovision Song Contest that year.
That was then...fast forward to 2004 and we find her name pared down to Miriam Christine, looking all grown-up and sexy and with a great album to boot. Not only does "Little Zee", her latest CD, consign Miriam Christine's "Festival" tag to the past but it is also one of the best albums released by a Maltese artist for quite some time.
Written by Miriam Christine herself and her husband Mark Warner the album covers a variety of styles and moods. The production is in the hands of the talented Boris Cezek who also plays most of the instruments on the album. Tackling very personal material (including Miriam Christine's adoption) was always going to be very risky but this gives the album a sincerity that I'm sure will prove to be one of its strengths. The album can be considered autobiographical without being self-indulgent.
The music is distinctly R 'n B in flavour, ranging from funky urban numbers to soul ballads. The quality of both the songwriting and the execution is consistently high with Miriam Christine's voice sounding both warm and mature. The album contains updated versions of her recent singles "Reptile Lover" and "Hold On" as well as her latest single "Hush".
This will be an album that will definitely go a long way to establishing Miriam Christine as one of Malta's top singer/songwriters. It also deserves to do well overseas given the right backing. May she be as successful as Ira Losco in securing a record deal with a major record company that could distribute this album worldwide. Little Zee deserves to be heard!
