howdy all...i'm new to the board...and fairly new to file sharing
i have a question, hopefully, someone can help out
i am running winmx on my laptop, windows me, zone alarm pro as my firewalll. I have a fast cable connection with a good, clean signal. I can download at very high speeds, using winmx, ftp, and through my web browser. No problems there.
The problem started a couple days ago on my upload. I can't. Whether I'm using winmx or even cuteftp, my uploads start at good speeds and then dwindle down to nothing and time out. I've tried everything. Disabled (and uninstalled) the firewall, updated all the drivers, tried primary and secondary connection.
Can this problem be caused by my ISP? Or is this more likely a user or system error and something I need to fix myself?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Might be your ISP or a server between you and your destination. Have you performed tests to see if there is a correlation between the amount of data transmitted and the drop-off point? If there seems to be a connection then try changing the ports though which you do transfers. One easy way to test if it's the ISP/network is to find someone else who uses the same ISP and try some uploads (best if you can have your laptop doing simultaneous transfers). If other pc uploads and yours doesn't then problems just your laptop. Check your Tcp/ip settings, check ports, disable other communication/power management software, and check hardware.

Thanks for the tips. I think the problem is my isp, although I don't have an extra laptop to really test this.
I did hook up a dial up accont and try to transfer. Of course, that is much slower, but it did not time out and the transfers seemed to work.
So, I think the problem is with my broadband isp, or could it be the way that my laptop connects to the broadband account, ie the lan card, drivers, etc. I don't know enough about the setup to check the ports or anything like that. But I still don't understand how only my uploads could be affected while my downloads remain fast as ever.
Any other ideas?
Thanks.

Some conflicts have been reported with NIC cards, particularly (but not only) LinkSys. The recommendations I have heard to fix that problem (if such it is) are to put the card in PCI slot 1 (for the bus-mastering on boards that limit it to slot 1), update the card drivers, or change cards entirely.
But your case is different in that switching to Secondary did not help, and that almost always does.
Have you tried the latest versions of WinMX? They have gone from Beta 1 to Beta 4 now, last I heard. But those are connected to less active networks, and the number of hits on files will be very limited.

I know that my laptop can't handle the laod of being a primary user. I've tried that.
But connecting as a secondary, even running ZoneAlarmPro, was working until last week (Thursday or Friday). Now, I can't upload for more than a few minutes with out the speeds dropping down to 0.0 and timing out. Even using ftp, the guy on the other end will see me as going idle after a few seconds/minutes, even though I am ftp-ing from him at 30Kb/s.
Hopefully, my ISP will get back to me today or tomorrow with an answer.
