Some, not all of my .AVI files won't play properly in Windows Media Player. I try to play a video and I can hear it but I get a green screen. I have to use VideoLan to play them and would rather use Windows Media Player.. Do I need a codec ? some help please

Try downloading and installing a program called gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) . You just point it to the video file in question and it will tell which codecs are needed to play the file and wether or not you have them installed.

The problem lies in the ffdshow filter. Which is what the link I posted will help him with.

Actually, if I remember right VLC has its own codecs, so you don't need a codec pack to play it in VLC.

green screen is cause by FFDShow. You need to find your own, on SF.

Ok now Miniver is totally right here. Follow the directions to clear up your problems.
BTW, thanks for the link, I've had problems with FFDShow and tried every configuration under the sun to no avail. With this Alfa version I can now watch some movies that were either green, blank or jumpy with no problems.
