It is constantly said that we live in a changing world. The first International Children's Singing Festival event, to be held on the 16th, 17th and 18th September 2004 at Sit Temi Zammit Hall at the University of Malta, is a global turn-on to singers to explore and exhibit their talents. It has received an enormous response from eight different countries around the world. The foreign singers participating in this Festival are from Sicily, Italy, Macedonia, Serbia, Poland, Russia, Bulgaria and Moldovia, making up a nicely formed group of 13 participants.
This event, sponsored by the Government and Private entities, is in the working hands of a team, which is directed by Mr. Anthony Grech who is a member of the International Federation of Festival Organizers (FIDOF). He will ensure the quality of organization, professionalism, quality of hospitality, aims of the event in conformity with FIDOF's aim -- "peace and friendship through music and art".
The Festival is adequately formed to cater for Maltese singers, singing both original songs composed by Maltese composers and lyric writers as well as cover versions, who will have the opportunity to compete with international singers. The singers will be represented by the U.K.A.M (Unjoni Komposituri Kantanti u Awturi Maltin).
The singers will be chosen to sing either on Thursday 16th September or Friday 17th September and will undertake rehearsals in the afternoon of the corresponding day. In the final day, Saturday 18th September, winners will sing their song. This day will be recorded and transmitted on a local TV station as well as on foreign channels.
Those interested in taking part in this unique festival are to hand in the application form not later than Wednesday 18th August 2004 at noon. These are acquired from the reception of Bay Street Hotel or info line 99452697; E-Mail: festivalgoldencross@mail.global.net.mt. The singer's age marked in the application form has to be the one corresponding to the participant's age of when application forms are handed in.
The contest will be divided into three categories. Category 'A' holds singers aged 6-8, category 'B' corresponds to singers aged 9-11 and in last category 'C' singers are 12-15 of age.
Singers can apply for more than one song, but only one song is to be interpreted in the festival. Attached to the application form, one has to submit a CD of the recorded song -- track 1 with the music and solo voice and backing vocals and in track 2 the backing of the song and accompanied by the backing vocals, a copy of the lyrics of the song, a copy of the baptism certificate of both the soloist as well as that of the backing vocals and the entry fee. Entries are handed-in at the reception of Bay Street Hotel.
The parents of the respective participants are obliged to have all the necessary permissions so as to have their children performing the songs composed by the different composers.
The applicants will pass from an eliminatory phase where nine final participants in each category will be chosen to perform in the Festival days. The songs will be judged on CD (completed song) by a professional jury team, made up of different jury members, taking care of the final phase.
In the first day of the event, 16th September 2004, the foreign singers will sing with half of the Maltese and Gozitan participants. The audience can participate by voting for the best interpretation.
In the following day, the foreign participants will sing a different song and will compete with the other half of the Maltese and Gozitan contestants.
In the last day, the result will be announced and the winners will sing their song. A representative of U.K.A.M. and a member of the organizing board will be present. Votes will be given for interpretation, voice, diction and personality.
A Grand Prix will be given to the overall winning participant and will be awarded the trophie Golden Cross. Following this are the two running up singers from each category and the winner. Two other trophies will be given to the best interpretation and to the best composed song. Two other trophies will be given as the FIDOF award and the Pistoia award. A souvenir of the occasion will be given to every contestant. The Maltese and Gozitan winners will be given the opportunity to sing abroad.
This event will be entertained by group dancers (not older than 16 years of age). Dancers who are interested in taking part in this Festival should apply not later than the 18th August 2004 against a nominal fee. The groups taking part will not compete but will be given a souvenir. Elimination of group dancers will take place according to the number of dancers applying to perform in this Festival. The groups will also have the chance to rehearse prior every evening.
Certainly, organizing such an event is not easy, it implies a huge effort, which is however doubled by an equal enthusiasm and we do hope that this idea will change into a traditional yearly event.
