Hi,

I've read the fantastic guide by Malicious Intent, but I can't seem to sort out what my problem is. I'm using azureus and I've turned off the windows xp firewall, but the downloads keep going yellow and sometimes blue!! I have a cable connection, with no routers, but the downloads and uploads won't get past 0-3 Kb!! Would be so kind and please help me..I'm going desperate! Thanks

You say they keep going yellow - does that mean that they are sometimes green?
Blue means that the tracker is down, but you are still connected to some peers, in which case you will be getting some slow download speed.

No, they were never green always yellow and sometimes blue. I've read other posts by people with the same problem, however my download rate never goes up to 50 or 60ks it's always between 0 and 5 ! Any ideas...

From the Azureus pages:
-----
Panda Internet Security (Windows)

Using the default settings in Panda Internet Security, programs aren't allowed to act as a server. To change this:

1) Double click on the panda head on the tray

2) Click on the Settings... button for Firewall Protection

3) Click on the Settings... button for Program with access to the network

4) Select the javaw process and click Advanced settings

5) On Connect from other computers (server) select the checkbox Allow (act as a server)

6) Optionally, select on which TCP/UDP ports you want to allow to java to bind to.

Repeat the process for the Java process if necesary.

Getting fustrated wont help you.
There must be something between your internet and you. Do me a favour and double check that the XP firewall hasn't switched itself back on. Try and think of anything that uses your internet. I mean, think how few people would have thought ZA could cause the problem it does? Therefore, don't be afraid to suggest anything.

Oh - and do a virus check and an ad scan, just so they can be ticked off.

There is talk that some ISPs throttle p2p ports.
Couple of reasons I don't think this is it
I don't believe this can be common practice without telling customers. You could always call and ask. I doubt they will stick their nose in, but you could always tell them it is to get some shareware. Remember BT is legal - it is what you are using it for that isn't!
Your speeds go up to 60k now and again.
If your ISP throttled, then theoretically you should still be able to connect to remote peers, so the face would be green

But then I could be wrong so:
Pick a number between 49152 and 65535.
Follow this:

2) Go to View>Configuration>Server and input the new TCP listening port that you have chosen.

3) Click "Save" at the bottom left side of the screen.
5) Stop ALL your actively running torrents.

This is temporary, just til you get the port thingy sorted out. Azureus will remember all the peers you were connected to when you start the torrents up again, even if the tracker is offline. No need to panic. Please ring a friend if you need any extra support during this trying experience. :-)

6) Quit Azureus.

7) Wait a few minutes.

8) Run Azureus

9) Go to File>Configuration Wizard and do the port test.

Just click "Next" on the first screen, and on the second screen you will see a port tester with 6881 entered in it by default. Change 6881 to the port number you chose earlier and click "test". You will then get any one of three results from this:

a) "This port can not be tested because it is already in use"
If you get this message, repeat steps 4 - 8
b) "NAT Error"
If you get this message, please see the PortForwarding page.
c) "Ok!"
If you get this message, then you have just done everything right, all is groovy, and the world should appear a much rosier place to live in. :-)

Did the virus check and the ad-scan, i had no viruses but i did have some ad things and got rid of them, however they were not the problem! Checked the firewall it was off. Im pretty sure this has to do with ports, because i went to details of the torrent im downloading and there were only L's (local users) could this be it? Thanks in advance...

- Did that port change to a higher number, it was ok in the test but the download is still yellow!!

I have just set the port to a high number 55000 something. All of my bt downloads will barely go anywehre. Sometimes, it goes for a minute at like 30 k, but quickly drops sources and stays at 20. I've tried this in shareaza, torrent topia, and ABC, help? I am missing bt. I'm dmz'd , I've double checked that, I was using shareaza with random port, before I tried the port I explained earlier.
Help?
My ISP is shaw, if that helps,

jpmarks - yes it has something to do with the ports. The question is what. Something is blocking direct a direct link from Azureus to the other peers. Usually it is a router of firewall, but you I don't know.
Have you got any other computers in the house you could hook up and try?
Think really hard about what it could be. Click through your Add/Remove Programs list for anything.

Serrebi - Have you also followed my guide and still stuck on yellow? And now you have tried the high port number thing? That was a bit of a stab in the dark. Like jpmarks, you need to think of anything else it could be. I just don't know what has been installed and I can't find anything that is a common problem.

jpmarks if the test said ok then the yellow should eventually change to green so be happy. Your done. serrebi have you done a port test like jpmarks did?

Serreci101 - if you set you port to a new higher number, remember to tell your router and everything else about the change. This is step 4, which I deleted for jpmarks.

Well done Whistler, I didn't see jpmarks had edited :)

Is this true...? The test turned out ok but the download is stillyellow...are you sure it will eventually become green?

Another question...could it be because of my dynamic IP? (i think i have one)

Thanks to all who have been helping me out...

Malicious Intent

Hopefully it will turn green, yes. The question is if you ever run this test when using a port from the normal range (6881?)? Leave it a while and see what happens. Then try another torrent. If neither go green in the next few hours (to be on the safe side), then we can panic a bit more =)

As for the dynamic IP, that should not be a problem. You would need to have a fixed IP within a LAN, but you said that you are directly connected, so you are fine. Good thought though.

Well i did a test with the normal port (6881) and it turned out ok too! That's bad right..especially if the download is still yellow! I am now trying another torrent and praying for it to work!! Anymore possibilities/solutions?

Thanks

Just wait jpmarks. The only thing I can think is if it is the torrent, or that you just haven't left is long enough.

*looks around confused*

It should take more than 5 mins to go green. Start another torrent and leave them a few hours.

EDIT: Should NOT take more than five minutes :-\ sorry.

I really dont think waiting will solve anything...so i wrote down whats between my computer and the internet!

- the board where i connect the modem (Elsa Microlink Cable)
- some kind of protection (firewall) that my ISP has
- the torrent itself
- the type of connection i have (I read something about a dhcp server)

I don't know whta else to think of!

Tell us more about the protection your ISP provides. What is it? Where is it installed? How much control do you have?

thats one of the major drawbacks of the bittorrent protcol it seems to the least user friendly of all the protocols for donwloading files no search function for the most part
