Has anyone managed to download anything with freenet? I am trying my best to get it to work. if anyone knows how, I would be grateful. I am testing it all out and I like it so far. just a little slow but that's to be expected. so I guess thanks in advance.

I had to leave it running for 24/7 for about 3 days before I could even get it to start browsing. But, whenever I clicked a download link, nothing ever worked. Maybe someone else has had a little better luck.

I'm not sure why but it just seems much much worse of late running either 5084 or the latest NG build. Even disabling my firewall has no effect... changing from XP to Linux does not either. I get very few incoming connections and 99% dead links if anything loads on the frontpage.
Their support ignores inquiries and no one responds on their irc channel anymore... Just 30-50 idle users.

freenet has always browsed quickly, and only loaded images, never got movies, propaganda, or anything of the sort to d/l successfully

my experiences with freenet have been similar dead links, when you could actualy find somthing-most content seems ..frozen in time at about this time2003 or was it 2002?
anyway i personaly think to make a system like freenet work decently you would need 100's of active users dedicatated to more than just sharing..they would want to divise ways of updating content to keep up with the outside world..

What to do with Freenet: Check Log for issues. Any issues, fix them. After, run freenet for a while (download a fresh seednodes.ref), (say 1 hour). Now, click on every link until you get something. Once you get something, wait a few minutes, and try to get more. Once you've done this 5 or so times, sit back and let it run. After this, it should get subsequently better every use.

I've used Freenet in the past and found the pages loaded quickly as did the pictures. Downloads were also succesful, averaging about 100 KB/s.
Mind you, i could never find anything on there that was worth downloading and so its likely the files i did try and download were well spread throughout the network.

Like a two years ago I had pretty amazing speeds on freenet, I don't know what they've done since then. Seriously, I was stuck with a 56k for a month or two and I used freenet and it was... bearably fast, almost as much as the regular internet, it suprised me.
Since then, it's gone downhill. Theres not alot of music or warez or anything. CofE was the only site I really ended up visiting. :-\. Someone should make a http mirror of CofE :-P

Freenet has pretty much turned into a hideout for kiddy pornographers. The network itself is a great idea and has wonderful potential. As much as I disagree with kiddy porn, the purpose of Freenet is free speech. I'm not rambling so I'll shut up.

I wonder if the same thing will happen to all anonymizing networks? MUTE, ANTS etc

I agree. I wouldn't use it due to those reason.. don;t really want no kiddy fidlers using my bandwidth to look at their freaky stuff.
