When ISN'T a restart required? stupid windows...

Install a small piece of software and gotta restart, uninstall? restart again. Update? you guessed it, restart baby! There should be a way to just restart the OS and not the whole computer, or flush all the files and caches.

there have been a few updates that did not require restarts...though they are few and far between.

If you don't want to bother keeping up with updates, or checking often, I would recommend "Big Fix". Find it at www.bigfix.com (http://www.bigfix.com)

You can subscribe to any applicable update lists. It will automaticly tell you whenever there are updates available, and then can download and install them for you.

Its also nice if for some reason you get errors with windowsupdate, or if you wear a tinfoil hat.

You can always disable active scripting, ActiveX, make your My Computer security zone visible and make all 5 zones High, make notepad the default for chm files. Then you'll be safe and secure but it'll be a pain to use certain sites unless you make them exceptions.
