given the fact that jack valenti and the RIAA would like nothing more than to fry most of us...
how safe is bit torrent to use?
how easy would it be to get caught?
as far as I can see, I'm only uploading when I have the window open...assuming I dont leave windows open for too much longer than it takes to DL wouldnt it make things rather difficult for the riaa or mpaa?

If you use a non-standard port number, I think it's pretty safe. I've yet to hear of someone getting caught using it yet, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. It's VERY easy to get all the IP's of the people you are connected to. If I'm not mistaken, the RIAA could look to download a file, and then gather IP addresses that way, but I really don't know if that's legal. I wouldn't worry about it too much yet.

makes sense
most of the stuff Im looking for and/or share isnt exactly stuff that the MPAA or RIAA has any interest in (off the hook episodes, rant radio episodes, ravi zaccarias sermons) but in case I do I like to know how safe I am....I thinking of bailing to waste...waste seems pretty safe
of course knowing someone already on it is kind of a bugger...

BitTorrent is actually one of the most un-safe programs. As FrozenShadow said, all you have to do is look in the window where it shows your connection, and record anyone who has 100% complete by their name. Technically, though, anyone with 1% or above is liable, since all parts of a work are protected and not just the song or movie as a whole.
But, since you dont have a "Shared" folder as you do with other networks, you only share one album or one movie at a time, instead of potentially dozens. So the chance of them suing does go down some, but keep in mind they have the authority to sue you for 250,000 dollars per movie if you are in the United States. I don't know the current fine for music.
