PeerGuardian is Alive
Over the past 6 months there has been some misinformation put about stating that PG had ceased development (not true) and that the program had been officially replaced with Protowall (also not true... although I don't deny that lots of users have chosen to replace PG with PW for obvious technical reasons).
BUT.. The truth is that the PG project is still going strong and we have some news on new releases and some new work in development that isn't far from going public.

Multi-Platform and Ports
- There's an unofficial open source C++ port (http://developer.berlios.de/projects/peerguardian) of the original version of PG available on-line.
- A MacOS version (http://methlabs.org/forums/showthread.php?t=978) is currently in development.
- A Linux version (http://methlabs.org/forums/showthread.php?p=7144#post7144) exists. (some aspects still in development)
Linux version is of course open-source, Mac version might be too.)
We are also considering work on some of the less common platforms like BeOS and AmigaOS!!!

Update To Old PG
PGv1.99 pr17 will be released soon as a temporary update for Win9x/ME users - at least until we get kernal level blocking sorted for the older platforms. (The pr17 update will have update-scheduling, an improved interface, more tools/functions, the ability to grab blocklists from multiple locations and further efforts to reduce the CPU.) - The WIP (pr16) version (http://methlabs.org/sync/pg199pr16.zip) is available for any existing PG users that want to test the new features.

PeerGuardian 2
Of course the main news is that PG2 is currently under beta-testing (http://methlabs.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1243) and things are looking really good.
PG2 blocks all protocols efficiently, this is done at kernal level and uses a silent self-installing driver when the app is launched (no need to install it seperately), it works on 64-bit XP (which some kernal-level blockers apparently don't like) and is released under the MIT license which gives developers a lot more freedom than the typical GPL open-source.
Although currently under beta-testing we are working hard towards a full public release soon. (There have already been leaks of the project anyway) :;)

So... hopefully there's less confusion.. PG is still an active project.. we're working on open-source multi-platform releases and the new PG2 looks like it's going to be pretty tight.
Please believe me... I do not make a habit of posting about PG and have only posted to correct some misconceptions and provide some updated info for people who want to know it. I'm not trying to push PG onto anyone either.. this post is aimed more at those with a current or past interest in the PG project(s).
Peace!!
