I know some of you have heard of Ubershare, but I decided to check out there site today, and boy! I was stunned, just stunned. These people are like MP3 Nazi's!!!! Insanely strict.
While reading their standards I couldn't help but remember that episode of Seinfeld with the soup Nazi. That if you didn't meet his standards then it was no soup for you.
Anyways, I was just wondering if any of you follow their guidelines? Me, I rip everything to Lame 3.90 EAC VBR, and don't download anything less than 192 (unless it's VBR).

I did at one time, but its essentialy impossible to get all the music I want, and all in perfect quality, especially if I want it right at the time I'm thinking about it.

yeah
the high quality russian service that takes whatever bitrate they find on p2p (or wherever their files come from) and then reencodes it to whatever you ask for
a 320 made out of a 128 still sucks

I'm a member of UberNet (under a dif username). . . I felt the same way at first glance, thinking, "Who do these ppl think they are?" and similar. After exploring further, I realized the reasoning behind all the rules, regulations, and guidelines.
Let me put it this way: if you are dedicated to the best quality, and are willing to put in some legitimate effort to get the best, then give Uber a try. If the rules are overwhelming to you, then you're prolly best off sticking to more mainstream p2p.

While the standard is a nice "zen" between quality and file size, if all you're concerned with is quality, then you'd probably want an even higher quality MP3/OGG or, in my case, a lossless format instead.

That's all true. . . but the LAME APS encoding is generally regarded as 99.9% indistinguishable from actual CD (by all but the most sensitive ears). That, plus the purity of rip provided by using Exact Audio Copy, makes Uber-rips nearly perfect IMO.
But, to each his own! :)

Lossless is nice and all, but until any one format gets standardized, I won't be using it much. I mean, I have an MP3 CD player in my car, it's not gonna play anything other than WMA and MP3 and I'll be damned if I let a WMA onto my computer.

about 6 months ago, I finally broke down and decided to join ubernet. it took me about a month to round up 25 CDs (i havnt bought anything since the early days of napster) and rip them to uberstandards. I applied about 5 months ago, and havnt recieved any info back. thinking the email didnt get through, I reemailed them under a different adress 2 weeks later, and then again, and again. after about 2 months of doing that, I said to hell with it. maybe ill try again, but its not as if I cant find music from other sources...

I'd suggest you re-apply now. They went through about a month w/o allowing any new members, but have started up again recently.

I belong a forum that lothes mp3 and will only accept lossless formats: shn, ape and flac.
People would even put the files they doubt into a spectral analyser to see if the files is mp3 sourced.
This site explains why: 'MP3 Is Unacceptable As A Trading Format':

huh no.. Its ripped into wav and recoded to FLAWLESS AUDIO OR 384kbs.. And then you can download it in any media format you want.. I could be downloading from hubs and others.. and keep getting a copy of a copy that later has more bits of data missing. Please dont assume you know everything or even half of it. YOu can not comment on something you have not tried or used.. I will have to start calling you seph jr.

instead of regurgitating their PR, you need to get yourself a spectral alalyzer and see for yourself
reencoded mp3s are often missing some of the frequencies over 16khz--get yourself a "wav" or "lossless" file from them and see for yourself (preferably one that you have the cd of and can make a control sample wav file)
the thing bw posted is a bit skewed (since they give no allowances for better encoding, and the spectral analyzer samples are not of the same size i.e. the mp3 one is 47 frames and the wav is 591--larger sample = wider response) but the basic idea plays out if you do it right
