i'm currently using Xnews, and I like it...but it doesn't do what i want it to.

Situation: news server limits binary transfers to 15 kB/s...but you can have two simultaneous connections. so I want to use both connections to bring in the download twice as fast...

Xnews won't do it, are there any that will?

I use powergrab you should check that out. www.cosmicwolf.com

you can set channel affinities with it too. So you can have multiple connections and you should be able to set it to do what your looking for too.

Grabit, Newsleecher, Newsreactor, newsbin... I never could decide on one. I say use them all until you find the one that you like the best.

normally, that's what i do...but i was rather desperate this time. running two instances of Xnews...one on my machine, and one in a vmware virtual machine on this machine.

i'm pretty ridiculous sometimes :)

I think they all have built multiple connections. You can get as many concurrent connections as your newserver allows. I use usenetserver.com, so I get 6 ways. Other places have more, others have less, but the software will split it as many times as it will be allowed to.

You should look at this. I actually just spent most of the past hour trying to remember what it was called...

http://www.novusnews.com/

It's supposed to be this next generation state of the art newsreader and downloader that has yet to get up to where they claim they want to go. People say it is really nice right now though.

I thought I would add my two cents as well. One Newsreader that I actualy registered has a great number of features tucked away although the interface isn't a work of art. It is great at what it is designed to do. The name of the program is NewsRover- It supports encryption (on the local machine) to keep prying eyes away from specified "Interest Groups" - Interest groups are another awesome feature this program has. Unlike other newsreaders I've tried, I can create an Interest Group and assign multiple news groups to that one group (For example software, pictures...etc) You can even have it sift continually throughout the day and download new articles and even have it only take the binaries. I set aside nearly 80gb on my computer in order to store these attachments and then later search through them at my leisure. My computer basically keeps a carbon copy of all binaries from the newsgroups I choose. Check the program out at www.newsrover.com The cons about the program is that the developer expects a new bribe for each version of the program after a year has passed (paying the renewl/initial fee entitles you to 1 year of free upgrades for that time period)

but xnews wouldn't let me transfer files from the same newsgroup with two concurrent connections.

I'm confused here.. You said xnews won't, I said try these, now you say xnews won't again. I didn't even mention xnews, lol.

when you said "I think they all have built multiple connections.", i thought you may have been referring to xnews as well (maybe?)...and it does, just not in the way that i want it to.

thanks for the suggestions though, i'm sticking with grabit for now.

I use it to. Couldnt be happier. I have tried many others and they crash alot on larger groups but this one doesnt. Its great.
