mp4 to avi or mpeg

I have some video clips in mp4, have had them for a while and can play them fine with winamp but wanting to put them on vcd is proving to be hard. Not many sites cover mp4 to avi, hell or even to standard mpeg for that matter.
Can anyone recommend a good conversion method for mp4 to mpeg or avi?

I was going to say just look up mp4 to avi on google, there are like 10,000 results of different programs to use.
