I have read just about everything on this site and others that deals with my situation. I am using azureus and have an average speed below 10 kbps. I am running Windows ME (yes, it sucks) and have no firewall or router. Therefore, I have no idea what is between my computer and my 1.5 mbps BellSouth DSL connection. Azureus shows the yellow smiley faces next to my downloading torrents. I have seen it jump up to 70 kbps but it comes back down after a few minutes. I am currently downloading a torrent from suprnova with 51 seeds and 364 peers. When I run the configuration wizard in Azureus and do a NAT test, I fail it. I don't know why and don't know what to do to forward ports (if thats necessary). I used the original Bittorrent client before my XP was wiped away by a hard drive crash and it was no different even with ICF turned off. In short, I have no clue what's wrong and I'm out of ideas. Thanks for any help you can give me.

switch to Shareaza for your Bittorent downloads its WAAAY better that azureus

I had yellow icon when I 1st started using BT also..but shutting down & unplugging all power to my modem fixed it for me...being Green didn't improve my speeds at all..just cause you see 51 seeds, doesn't mean you'll connect to them.

I've tried Shareaza and BitTornado. I saw no difference in speed, but I like Azureus's layout the most, so I will stick to it for now. lion, you said that green doesnt make a difference but thats not what the programs' websites are telling me. I think Bellsouth may have put a systemwide block on these ports or something, what other prots should I try than 6881? I tried some test on a website earlier that sadi all my ports between 5000 and 7500 were closed. I'm not really sure what any of that means, but maybe somebody couldgive me a recommendation on what to do other than switch programs to get faster than 20 kbps (the best I've ever had for an extended period). I have used download.com's secure dl program and gotten 950 kbps so im sure bt can do better than 20.

try using a higher port, generaly anything between 10000 and 65000 is ok, in your case anyway.
If you want to use Shareaza, it has a random port choser, tools, settings, connection, and check the random check box, restart and you should be good to go.

I'm always wondering if my ports are working correctly or if they are blocked...
Sorry I can't help with the Azureus thing I use it as well on my Mac and I never get above 15Kbs despite all the help I've gotten from ZPers...

i set Azureus to port 11000 and it made no difference after restarting. I have no idea what the problem is, I just threw out the idea of the isp blocking it as a possibility.

The modems bellsouth give you have firewalls built in. They dont tell you that. So yeah, go into your modems config and either turn off the firewall or open the right ports.

oh, ok. that explains a lot... now, how do i get into the config of my modem to change its firewall?

it should say in the instructions that came with it. i believe it has a web access, so id say http://localhost would do it, mabey not. i turned off my firewall in my modem and its dhcp server. They were conflicting with my wireless router. Try googling the name of your modem and firewall. That should help.

I have to say this.
My ISP seems to filter ALL my ports!!! The only port that seems to be left is 80..ofcourse. So..I can only get top speeds through port 80(default browser port). That bastards won't let us breath; I would gladly use port 80 just to eat their bandwidth and keep my computer 24/7 full of files to download..

I found out how to get into my modem config by typing command in the start->run box and then typing ipconfig. I then put my "default gateway" number in my address bar. Then, I was in my BellSouth configuration program. Thanks for all the help. Azureus is downloading at 70 kbps and has a green smiley!
