I haven't seen anyone talking about this, but I have used this for a couple of versions now and it's pretty cool. It's a pop3 convertor for gmail. I guess it could be considered similar to what yahoopops or hotmail popper do for their respective email accounts.

http://jaybe.org/info.htm for more information. It's a legit program and does not steal passwords. The source code was released to prove it.

For those of us that aren't yet savvy to the lingo, what does "pop3" mean?
What are the advantages?

Basically, you can use it to download messages and send messages (through smtp) in a local mail client, such as outlook express or the bat!.

From thefreedictionary.com:

POP3 - Version 3 of the Post Office Protocol. POP3 is defined in RFC 1081, written in November 1988 by Marshall Rose, which is based on RFC 918 (since revised as RFC 937). POP3 allows a client computer to retrieve electronic mail from a POP3 server via a (temporary) TCP/IP or otheronnection. It does not provide for sending mail, which is assumed to be done via SMTP or some other method.

POP is useful for computers, e.g. mobile or home computers, without a permanent network connection which therefore require a "post office" (the POP server) to hold their mail until they can retrieve it.

Although similar in form to the original POP proposed for the Internet community, POP3 is similar in spirit to the ideas investigated by the MZnet project at the University of California, Irvine, and is incompatible with earlier versions of POP.

Substantial work was done on examining POP in a PC-based environment. This work, which resulted in additional functionality in this protocol, was performed by the ACIS Networking Systems Group at Stanford University.

RFC 1082 (POP3 Extended Service) extends POP3 to deal with accessing mailboxes for mailing lists.

and for smtp:

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - (SMTP) A protocol defined in STD 10, RFC 821, used to transfer electronic mail between computers, usually over Ethernet. It is a server to server protocol, so other protocols are used to access the messages. The SMTP dialog usually happens in the background under the control of the message transfer agent, e.g. sendmail but it is possible to interact with an SMTP server using telnet to connect to the normal SMTP port, 25. E.g.

Thank you dark, kind words are always appreciated.

You can only upload 10 mbs per message, so I would use winrar and have it split the movie into a bunch of 9 or so mb files, then attach each one to a gmail message. It really wouldn't take very long if your connection is fast because gmail is very fast as it is.

and since these things are cached on their servers...it wouldn't be hard at all to move them, i.e,, "forward them' to someone else's gmail account almost instantly.

all someone would have to do is make a request to see my home videos and they could in theory download as fast as their connection allows as the transfer to their account would be almost immediate..i assume. ~grins~

Now i just need one more g-mail account and I'm set..anyone got an extra one?

Thank you Janet, Hunter.

I have been file sharing since liek the first day Napster came out and with more creative ways prior to Napster, coming here since it pretty much opened long ago and finally registered here in December of 2002, but I never really got enough time to post prior to this. I have built up a lot of experience over the years and always read through the forums when I got a chance, so I have in a way been monitoring all of you for a while now.

Recently I decided to take the Summer off to spend it with my stepbrother who has ran into a lot of problems with drugs and school related activities. Now that I finally have slowed down enough to put forth the effort that I always wanted to give to this site, I now am acting upon it and trying to give 110%. It's really nice when people take notice and I promise that I won't falter out again or just walk away. This upcoming school year is going to be harder (I go to one of the hardest colleges in the world to graduate from), but in a major I am more comfortable in. So even when the Summer ends, I'll still be around contributing.

I just enjoy helping people so much that I don't care if they post the same question every day or if they continue to screw up and ask for help. It's fun to just give back and watch people become better at what they enjoy.

I agree too, you really are quite something alliercollins. You've helped me out with gmail too, and you help a lot of people out I've seen. So, it's really great to have you here. And I'm sure we all hope that you will be around for a long time.

Take care, Greetz

that's what I was gonna say. I got an error about a missing dll called, "mscoree.dll"..when I found it and installed the dll I then got an error message about changing a registry key to point to the location of the .NET framework...basically I'm just confirming your findings.
