O.K., I can't find the original thread about this, so I'm starting a new one. Recently, several people were raving about the Philips DVP 642 DVD player. It was supposedly macrovision free right out of the box. So, I took the bait and went out and bought one. It's a good player because it's cheap and it plays just about every format there is. However, it is NOT macrovision free! People have been claiming that it is in other forums, too, so maybe I don't quite understand what "macrovision free" is. To me, it means that if I hook it up to my DVD recorder, I should be able to record. No such luck. I get the message "copying of this material is not allowed." I have a Panasonic DMR-E80H Video Recorder. When I look up hacks on that machine, I just get people trying to sell me little gizmos that are supposed to remove the copy protection. They want about $100. for those. Do they work? Probably not. The Panasonic has excellent editing abilities, but I can't copy my old VHS tapes nor back up my new DVD's . So, what do I do? Buy one of those gizmos? Get a new DVD burner for my computer? (The one I have, not that old--a Memorex--never really made good DVD's; too unstable; that's why I got the recorder.) :mellow I really don't know what to do. I'm sick of taking the bait and buying equipment that brings me only part way to where I want to be. Can somebody help?
