Counting Crows are one of those bands that you don’t realise how many hits they’ve had until you put on a greatest hits collection. It’s all here for you to hear, FM pop radio darlings spanning the Crows’ thirteen year career.
Their American-style guitar pop has become a staple part of many music-lovers diets, largely thanks to hits like ‘Angels of the Silences’, ‘Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby’, the juggernaut hit ‘Mr. Jones’ and even more recently ‘American Girls’.
Their cover of the old Joni Mitchell classic ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ is also included on this recording as well as the customary “previously unreleased track” so those diehard fans can’t go without having it. In this case it’s a cover of the Grateful Dead’s ‘Friend Of The Devil’, a track that works well with the band, despite their polished sound taking away from the raw sound of the original.
As with all best of compilations, this really is the best of Counting Crows and unlike many other groups releasing their back-catalogue compounded onto one or two discs, this is a group that actually deserves it.
