Well, I just wanted to know what your guy's thoughts are on JoJo. She's only 13 and can sing like a mofo. Her song's called 'Leave (Get Out)' and her debut CD comes out this month.

However, even though she's only 13 shes not a teenybopper. She's pretty R&B, kinda like Aaliyah and DC-3. Plus, she wrote 3 of the songs on her CD. Anyways, what do you think of her? So far her song is doing pretty good at radio, but, we all know P2P is where it matters most.

Oh, BTW, this is a pic of her. So young....

Yeah she is pretty damn good I will admit. I heard her through radio disney. I have to listen to that channel when I am outside working because I live/work in a valley and my old walkman will only barely pick that station up. I cant even get FM. I have heard a few great singers though through that channel, christy romano, myra, and a few others. Young singers are so impressive nowadays.

Young singers are so impressive nowadays.

With digital recording technology being what it is, YOU and I would be impressive also.

I think with all this studio magic it has skewered peoples perception of what an amazing pure voice is; kind of like how the "beauty" and cosmetic/fashion industry has destroyed mens sensibilities when it comes to women, the same thing has happened with singers.

Hey me and you could do a duet, we could call ourselves "P Two P" LOL

I dont form a 100% opinion about ANY singer until I hear them unplugged, thats how avril got her narrow ass busted. A few female singers that I KNOW are real singers are

Mandy moore
christy romano
anneliese van der pol
Christina Aguilera(sp?)
Lillix(heard them perform unplugged)

Hilary duff has to have her audio track doubled to make her voice full. Avril is a total digital workover.
I too agree with you about how men view women. I have recently took a little look back in time, I have looked at pictures od "hot" girls through recent decades. And many of the "classic hotties" of the 50's through 70's would be considered only average for most stars now. Many would be viewed as overweight as well. Overall society has changed. Men AND women are expected to be "hot" not NORMAL. Its no wonder many teen girls are depressed about their bodies. How can they stand up to girls who enhance themselves physically and have a team make their images/sounds better?

The image of perfection is always thrust upon people. I have noticed a shift at attitudes towards it as well, years ago it was viewed as "it would be great to have her body" to now "I MUST have her body, and I will kill myself to get it".

Perosnally, I like "real" girls. I find myself sickened by pam anderson, although most question if I am gay when I say that. I would rather have a girl with small breasts thats confident in herself than a headcase with huge tits anyday.

This girl actually can sing though, she was on America's Most Talented Kid. The studio magic can't make people amazing singers live in that kind of context.

And WTF?!?!?!?! Avril is nooooooooooooo studio makeover! She can sing. Granted, she can be a bit pitchy at times, but thats because shes never gotten professional training. Download some of the acoustic sessions@AOL from Under My Skin, and you'll see.

I saw Jessica Simpson sing The Star Spangled Banner before a baseball game once(on TV) before I knew who she was.She was outstanding.I couldn't name one song of her's but I see her in the news all the time.
Edit-If I wasn't delirious from working in the heat today I would have noticed the Jessica Simpson post and then I would be able to name a couple songs.

Sk8er Boi
June 15th, 2004, 08:54 PM
Okay, I just downloaded the video and I must agree. She looks 15, 16 in it because of the make up and clothes.

I don't really like the video, it's a bit too Britney-esq with the dancing in the school. Hopefully she won't become like Britney because she really is a good singer, and at the age she is now imagine how good she could be by like 20, 22. I would hate to see her trade in her music career for a porno career.

edit: you can tell she is still young in the video though because she hasn't finished puberty and she still has her chubby little cheeks in place.

Then she must get nerves like a MOFO cause all the live recordings I have heard of her she cant keep one pitch in her voice. I understand she has no training, but its NOT that way on her album. She has PERFECT control over her voice in the records, I would expect the same live. A singer is only as good as their live/unplugged performance. I will give her props for doing them though. Britney wont dare do an unplugged event.

JoJo's ''Leave--Get Out--'' surpasses Nelly's ''Dilemma''

''This engaging debut portends a promising future.''- Billboard

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2004-- Universal recording artist, JoJo, makes her way on to the Billboard charts in her fist week of release with JOJO. The hot newcomer entered at #4 on the Top Albums Chart among industry hip-hop heavy weight Jadakiss and the soundtrack to the sequel of the blockbuster smash Spider Man.

In addition to the success of JoJo's 14 track self titled debut, her first single "Leave (Get Out) also continues to grow at radio. "Leave" which showcases the larger than life vocals of this teenage phenomena and was produced by Soulshock and Karlin and claims the #2 position on Billboard's Top 40 Radio Chart. "Leave (Get Out)" has earned Greatest Gainer honors for 5 consecutive weeks at Mainstream Top 40. The last song to take the Gainer lead for 4 straight weeks was "Dilemma" by Nelly Featuring Kelly Rowland in July/August 2002, while the last by a new artist was Blu Cantrell's "Hit Em Up Style (Oops)" in July/August 2001.

As June's LAUNCH emerging artist of the month, JoJo's hit song and video "Leave (Get Out)" have been played nearly 2 million times, making it the #1 on-demand video on LAUNCH talent. "Watching JoJo become the biggest Emerging Artist LAUNCH has ever had is a strong testament to LAUNCH working with our listeners to find the new stars of tomorrow first", states Jay Frank- Head of Label Relations for LAUNCH. She continues to dominate the online market as the #1 video on VH-1.com.

That's amazing! I just hope the success doesn't go to her head.

I was able to listen to the album, and I think her voice is just amazing. The only problem with the cd is that some of the songs just aren't (amazing that is). Dont get me wrong, there's a collection of great hits on it, but there seems to be a bit too much filler on it. Hopefully, her next go-around will contain better tracks.

It's funny though, just about every song she helped co-write are the stand out tracks.

Also backround singers liven it up a bit and make it sound more...full. Nowadays artists at concerts have like 3-4 'good' backround singers who practicaly sing everything whilst the artist dances around going 'oh yeah' and 'uh' throughout the song. The art is lost.

I agree to an extent. but Avril cansing. I remember at first, she was alright, bordering on the edge of okay. However, since Let Go came out she has improved completely and is now a great singer. The only reason people say she can't sing is because on Let Go, Arista, wanted to process her voice, and made it sound higher pitched then it was, and so in concert it would sound bad when she tried going up high. But this time around she took a firm stance and wanted the voice on the record to be unaltered. If you want proof download the sessions@AOL for Under My Skin.

Totally agree....

In fact I prefer a small chest, and a 'fuck the world I'm me' stance on socities judgment. Funny thing is not many women past 20 are able to get through the first few teenage years of people being ego driven assholes so they end up with crap self esteem and boob jobs.

I also agree that Mandy Moore and Christina Aguilera have some serious chops. I'd also submit Jessica Simpson to this group. Christina has the best voice, of the three.

Avril has a decent voice. Nothing super amazing about it. I have to admit I REALLY enjoyed some of her music for a while, but it got old. During that time I listened to pretty much anything I could get my hands on, including a ton of acoustic and/or live material--yes Sk8erBoi, that includes the tracks you've mentioned a million times--and I can't say I'm all that impressed with her performance.

Don't ask me why, but that woman is byfar one of the hottest people on earth. She may not have the best stomach, best langauge-isms or best anything for that matter, but there's just something about her...must be that latin blood.

edit: I think it may be the way she wiggles her hips, if you watch the video for Whenever Wherever, or any live thing concert by her, the way she wiggles her hips and shakes her ass it looks exactly like sex. But somehow she doesn't come off looking whorey when she does it.

I dont really care for shakira myself, so I havent heard much of her stuff. So I cant honestly make comment on her. I will say though that watching her dance makes me feel......funny. :) Having said that I will add that I think the popularity of a female singer it too dependent on her looks rather than her voice. A perfect example of this is Tatu, I have NEVER heard such a high pitch scream from a singing group. But their popularity is based more on making out than singing.

I would like to submit the group Lillix for judgement. They are hot and can sing quite well. LOL

Lillix is pretty good. They're not hot, but not hurtful on the eyes either. They can sing pretty well too.

Personally, I agree that too much is put on looks and not enough on talent. (Just for the record, Shakira does have talent, loads of it). But then again, now when you support an artist you're not just buying their music but their image as well.

SexKrazedMoneky, I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Josh Groban! He is so talented, and has such an amazing voice. I actually went to the trouble of buying his CD's the legal way. I think he's that good.

Vanessa Carlton is back, she's an alright singer I suppose. Her new song White Houses is fairly decent.

And shawners, Everyone can sing, physically we're all capable, but it does not mean we are all good at it. Just about all 8 year olds can sing, but it doesn't mean they're all good.

Personally, and I know I'm gonna get a lot of comments about this, but I think Britney used to be a really good singer. Back in the day she sang very Whitney-assured and with a lot of soul. For proof, download just about any song from Baby One More Time. Now though, her voice is so processed and computerized, it's barely reconizible. Boo-earns for Britney.

The success of "Baby It's You" follows the path of success JoJo has with her first single, "Leave (Get Out)," which reached #1 on the Top 40 chart allowing JoJo to break a record as the youngest artist to reach the #1 position. The video has also been a staple in the LAUNCH Top 10 since its debut, reaching over 5.5 million streams to date and is among LAUNCH's Top 5 most streamed videos of the entire year. "Baby It's You" has stayed in MTV.com's Top 10 videos, since its online premiere on September 7th. JoJo's "Baby It's You" Sessions@AOL performance continues to hold strong in the AOL Music Top 11 for its seventh consecutive week, garnering over 2.8 million streams.

JoJo has several upcoming appearances including: American Dreams, where she will portray a young Linda Ronstadt (NBC/Nov. 21); Steve Harvey's Big Time, where she will be joined by Bow Wow for a performance of "Baby It's You" (FOX/Nov. 21); and TNT's Christmas In Washington (TNT/Dec. 15). She has also been tapped to the tennis stars Serena and Venus on their McDonalds Presents Serena and Venus Williams Tour, in Detroit Nov. 18 and Atlanta Dec. 2.

That's rad that she has a Platinum album at 13/14. Would love to be in her shoes, commercial whorism and all!

When I first heard Baby It's You, I didn't like it. But its grown on me and now I find it really enjoyable.

The thing you have to remember when listening to JoJo's music is that it's just music. She's not trying or even wanting to be deep, meaningful or anything. It's pure fluff, but it's good, catchy fluff.

You don't know what she is or isn't trying to be. She's out to make money though, just like the vast majority of artists out there.

I think that's what he's indicating. She's 13, producing fluff, and making money. Fluff nonetheless, catchy fluff :P

14-year-old pop star JoJo is asking her fans to help her choose her next single. They can cast their votes on her official web site www.jojoonline.com. JoJo says, "My record company wants more singles. But I don't know because it's between three…'Never Say Goodbye,' 'Homeboy' or 'The Happy Song.'" JoJo's debut album has sold more than one million copies in the U.S. Last month, she filmed the video for her third and current single "Not That Kind of Girl." JoJo is now in Australia filming her first movie Aquamarine, which also stars Julia Roberts' niece Emma Roberts. Emma and JoJo play best friends who find a mermaid and have to figure out a way to get her back to the sea.

And I must admit, JoJo has lasted a lot longer than I thought she would. Although, "Not That Kinda Girl" is one of the worst songs on her CD. I'm still hoping she'll release "City Lights"

Hmm now I have a question. This girl is selling her self as a sex symbol so when my pants get tight does that make me a bad person? Thinking and acting are two very different things, I have her 18th bday marked on my calender.

Sorry. Just trying to clean up the references. I will check if it has enough of other stuff to bring back. I didn't completely delete it just for this reason. i will keep your feelings in mind :)

I think I will keep it deleted. But let's just pretend it never happened and let the rest of the "government" to decide on the rest right now. I am not going to make the decision quite yet.
