Ok guys. The question is simple. Which is the best game in history it has ever been designed? For me is Quake III Arena. For you?

Halo 2 isn't out you fool. You can't name a game that hasn't come out as the best game ever. Are you prescient? Can you remember playing it in the future?

You people and your FPSs... where is the story? I will admit it can be fun to frag, but they lack substance.

You guys are going to hate me, but I'm going to say Myst. For the time, it was a groundbreaking game - it was the first to ever use a CD as it's only medium, it featured gameplay that was never really done before, not to mention that it made that difficult cross over into mainstream (with everyone buying it) - which, at the time, was a lot tougher to do then it is today.

The legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. No contest. The contest at gamefaqs was bullshit, how on earth is chrono trigger better than zelda. The only good turn-based fighting rpgs to ever come out were mario rpg, paper mario, and Earthbound. The rest of that genre, including all the final fantasy games, are terrible. The only good final fantasy game is final fantasy adventure for gameboy, because it is realtime fighting rather than turn based.

Peace Out

Any Poker Game

Even strip poker?

I thought halo was overated. Good multiplayer, but in single player the levels are very repetitive.

I wonder if half life 2 will ever get to make it onto this thread.

For it's time, Doom.

But in my opinion, and I know I'm not alone, Half-Life is the best game of all time, still to this day.

For consoles, I'd have to say Final Fantasy VII is the best of all time.

What are you talking about. The game that promped this reply, Halo, has a very good story. You have obviously not played it all the way through. What do you mean by substance?

I think Halo, Goldeneye, and Super Mario 64 are all magnificent games. Final Fantasy requires to much thinking. :shoot

The absolutely most fun I have ever had (and still do) from a video game has to be from Daggerfall. It is still considered the biggest computer role playing game ever made. This place has tens of thousands (yes you heard me right) of unique dungeons houses temples towns etc etc. and they are all huge sometimes taking days to find your way out of. It has working weather and time and calendar systems. You can catch diseases towns have holidays that are unique to the country your in. a nice weather system which is seasonally accurate. A huge collection of monsters about 5,000 pages of text worth of REAL books to read in game. Huge political factions and a functional economy. You can buy ships houses horses carts. You can talk to random people and have conversations. You can make you own weapons and armor and magically enhance them. heck you can build your own custom character class with like 32 million possible combinations. its not a game its a reality SIM.... I could go on forever there is so much to tell... THE SKY IS THE LIMIT you don’t even have to follow the main quest you can settle down in a town of your choosing and work for a living. It is one game that you can truly suspend your disbelief, and forget your playing a game. I have vivid memories of playing the game and eating food (in game) and wondering why I was still hungry, or trying to remember how to urinate in game because I had to go in RL LOL (NO JOKE) its is quite possibly the best game ever made ever IMHO. you can get it off of any major p2p app but i didn't tell you that. also you have to have an older win98se machine to play it or set up a dos partition on your hard drive and use a slow down util.

Yea, seriously. Its definetly more than half done, though, I bet if they arent already finished they will be by september. That leaves a good couple of months for a full on media blitz, preorders, and all that. Its gonna kick ass though. And for those who say it was overrated, what are you smoking? Goldeneye - Best played with good friends while wasted
Mario Kart 64 - Play for beers each race, or shots.
Super smash bros - Simply fun when smashed.

There is a new LSL game "coming" out soon; although it lacks the creator of the game and will more than likely be a lame "new-style" Sierra game instead of the Graphical adventures we all loved so much.

If you are a computer game player, you know that so many great games have over the years been produced.

In the early 80's Asteriods was the coolest game ever. There has been nothing since Asteroids or quite like Asteriods. It might have been the first videogame that I saw. (I did see a sears VCS pong machine, but it was not working at the time. )

I remember a time when computers were not in homes. I think it added a mystic to the games. The first videogame I saw was in mall (single unit) and played asteriods. There was nothing like it. It had sound and the vector graphics were fluid like you were in outerspace.

Atari 2600 had some good games, I played hours of "Haunted Mansion" when I was a kid.
Commodore 64 had the best home game software in the late 1980's.
NES games Zelda, Early Final Fantasy games, megaman, bionic commando. All Great games.
SNES squaresoft titles were great, as were many of the SNES titles.

Grandia 2, Harry Potter game one, and Return To Castle Wolfenstein were all great games. RTCW vas (joke) very realistic.

The best modern game has to be FF7. I bought a PSX just to play FF7. FF7 was the first game I played that had female characters with breasts. FF9 was also good.

Some of the gameboy and gameboy advanced titles were great. Kid Dracula was an import that was the best gameboy game I ever played. For fun I liked the Lola puzzle series, and Zelda a link to the past as well as the final fantasy games (ff) were great to play on the gameboy. The only gameboy advanced title I played was castlevaina circle of the moon. A great game, just so many games and same repeating elements that take 40-80 hours of gameplay just take to much time to complete.

In the last few years I was thinking of getting back into gaming, but too many choices, and most of the games are based on the same repeating game elements that younger players find interesting are now repetative and boring.

In a few years we will have pda's that run winXP. With existing emulator software and a (hopefully) detachable) mini-keypad attachment, we could play almost any game ever produced. The hackers have been doing this for years thanks to Mame, GB, SNES, PSX, and other console and home computer emulators....

There was an online game bbs game called tradewars and then tradewars 2000. Tradewars was fun to play. It was a sector based trading game trade ore, organics and equipment to make money to build your ship and your planet game and blast other players out of the game.

At some point you have to ask yourself is this worth the time?

All of this at one time was considered cutting edge technology. 100 years from now perhaps pacman will be cited as best game ever. Like us most of this technology and games will be forgotten, unless we live to 180.

My prediction is that in a few years open source games will be better than any single commerical product ever produced.

Remember NES Metroid?? And MeTAL gear? Also they had gauntlet.. Super mario brothers 2 is still good =) Graphix kept improving on it. I remember having a commodore with cartridges to plug in the back, and playing Ghost Busters and other great games. I had tons of games for NES and then i went to Sega rather then buying super nes.

my favorite has always been the baldur's gate series, I mean that had to be the best rpg I've ever played, great game, great graphics (for its time), and the best story in any rpg ever made in my opinion. To all you final fantasy nuts I suggest you go play that game to know what a real rpg should be likeif that is you have the patience to play an rpg of that level.

Yes, we all KNOW the best software and or products come from those who work for free.

The difference is, with games so much is both reusable and portable, example being the unreal tournament [200{3|4}] mods, which are awesome and change the game drastically, now imagine if the whole thing was open source, people could use the engine and other parts to make a flight sim, racing games, all kinds of stuff. Open source gaming would really kick ass.

Such a question will always be colored by subjective preferences about genre, depth and artwork.
I've a damn hard time coming up with an order, but games I have really, really enjoyed a lot are:

Amiga version of original Rail Road Tycoon (None of the successors or PC version were ever as fun).
Baldurs Gate 1&2 and expansions (RPG that probably will forever be unequalled)
Morrowind (Far out experience if you do it right: patience and no powergaming)
Far Cry (IMO the supreme shooter so far. Better than HL2.)
Amiga version of Frontier (Fantastic experience at the time. Probably boring by todays standards. PC versions were unplayable)
Amiga version of PowerMonger (Extremely underrated game, by reviewers who never figured out how to play it. I could never get the PC version to work. Another of the pre-Windows95DirectX games.)
Grand Prix Legends (Still the ultimate race driving simulator? Haven't tried GTR yet)
Amiga Speed Ball 2 (Ultimate "physical" sport and ultimate sport game)
Masters of Orion 2 (The empire/strategy game that got it right. No boring artificial balancing and still keeping you on a knife edge for days.)
C64 Silent Service (Unfortunately the last real Sub-Sim ever made. But pretty good for a C64 and it's days.)

Shining Force 2 for Sega Genesis
(Best RPG ever. I've never been a fan of the final fantasy "3 people standing taking turns, running up to the oponnent to attack, or shooting with a gun, space doesn't really matter" format.
Final Fantasy Tactics was pretty cool, but it had already been done before and, I feel, better by SF2.)

Honorable mention: Total Annihilation
The storyline was kind of lacking, but in terms of the game play I'd take it over Starcraft any day.
Plus all the 3rd party created units for it were kinda fun.

Can i get an amen on either account?
