Too bloated for me, and too slow. Plus, DRM, licensing, etc. It's just annoying, in my opinion, and it doesn't do a particularly good job of the things it DOES do.
I use Winamp or foobar for my music, and Media Player Classic (MPC)--which is NOT Microsoft related--for pretty mcuh evertything else. Handles anything you throw at it, provided you have the proper codecs. I recommend the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack for that. MPC is easy to use for beginners, but also provides alot of more advanced options. It is also very lightweight in resources used.

Its okay. It has nice video controls, like for brightness and such so on some dark xvid movies thats nice. It also renders video slightly better than 6.4 does. Its a tad on the slow side launching sometimes though. And it has Roxio installed with it and it can really fuck up the drivers for nero on occasion. I only got it to play DRMed walmart music files when I tried it out but its actually kinda nice.

I like it! much better than 7 in handling and the quality of the windows media video and audio 9 are much better as the predecessors!

I've upgraded - for video, it's great. But for just playing music, it's far too bloated - for example, I'm running a 2.53 GHz P4. When WM9's minimized and only playing an mp3, on average, it takes up about 11% of my CPU. Don't ask me why though...

i have it but i don't use it much. why i really don't know. i haven't had any problems with it. it has some nice features and in my case mp3 playback sounds better than winamp.
christoph i think if you go into tools-options- then player and un check start player in media guide will solve your problem. if not there is something in there that will.

www.quinnware.com ?? you must be joking i downloaded that, ugly, cluttered interface, i'd rather use Windows media player v9 .. good for video's. It's not a bad player, you should update if you use v7.1 or below is what i think

I love it. It's the only player I use anymore. Used to have JetAudio, Winamp, BSPlayer, etc. Now, I just use WMP 9. It's MUCH better than any previous versions.
And what's this about roxio? I have not noticed anything Roxio, and my Nero still works perfect.
And I've never had a problem with it playing any files. It plays all my DivX, xvid, mpeg, whatever. It plays everything. Something my other players wouldn't do. It recognizes all my codecs and everything perfectly. I would definately recommend it.
It installs the roxio/adaptec cd drivers for burning songs from within WMP9. Using the same driver/writer engine as easy cd creator. For a while back I heard of known issues between the drivers that easy cd creater used and the nero drivers. I installed WMP9 and nero FREAKED. It gave a ton of errors about the ASPI drivers I think it was. I had to reinstall Nero to clear it. Everytime I installed WMP9 after that gave the same issues. Maybe it doesnt happen to all but it messed me up.
Roxio now owns the easy cd creater software and renamed it to easy media creator in its latest version I think. So Adaptec easy cd creator would now be roxio easy cd creator.

You can edit this in the preferences by changing the "Start media player in _____" or "open _____ when starting WMP" or something to that effect.
It does do a better job than previous versions, I will readily admit. But it's still only par. MPC is much better.

People say its too bloated and runs too slow. The only machine of mine thats ever had a problem was my 233 P2 when playing Divx full screen. Even then, other players weren't much better. I think if you it slows your system enough its time to upgrade.
Playback quality is very good, the interface is very nice, and it rarely crashes (the occasional codec conflict).
DRM? Only if you let it...its not like it takes control of your PC and forces everything to be DRM'd.
I honestly only use it for videos, and only use videos in it. It does that well. For any music I'm not sure I could recommend it, winamp does a much better job.
BTW, I'm using WMP 10, its similar to 9 but looks more professional IMO.

WMP9 is good for Win2000/XP w/ DirectX9 (at least Pentium III) and i have no problem using it.. i like the SRS WOW effect especially if you have a good speaker system.. just turn off the Graphic Equalizer that usually eat 5% of yur CPU (5% for visualizations) and another 5% when SRS is on.

The SRS WOW effect is probably the only reason I use WMP9 for all my music, haven't seen this effect on any other player. plus with the klipsch promedias it really cranks out the heavy bass.

i have used media player 9 but it sometimes used to crash when minimised to the taskbar...i agree about the srs wow effect and media player 9 certainly has bass grunt and an overall quality sound...i quite like media player 8 on xp and play a lot of videos on it..they look and sound good..

Been running it for almost a year. Has great live streaming and play back plus you can download tweaks that improve the video player as well.

Guys I'm Glad you satarted this thread(The Hunter) because after a long time (and because these "Files" i found on the Web only playback on it) i've Decided that i will probably(Depending on the outcome of this question)will DL WMP 10 my only concern is what exactly does it do to your system(can it be uninstalled safely?) and what exactly Does it do DRM Wise and how do you protect yourself. i heard you should make a restore point in system Restore is this necessaryAny Ideas? Thanks!

DRM? Only if you let it...its not like it takes control of your PC and forces everything to be DRM'd.
A good reason to stay away from any client that has DRM installed.
What if your television had a DRM box that required you to pay per program on your cable tv or broadcast connection?

You can download plugins for other players to enhance bass effects, if you wish. There's always the equalizer, too.
I guess I'm just not convinced. Technical things aside (speed, resources, etc), other players just do things better. Not that speed and such don't factor into it, but I just don't see a compelling reason to "switch" to WMP.

This quote is about WMP10,but I am wondering the exact same thing about WMP9.I've got a few video files that are asking me to let them go out and play on the internet.I'm not so sure that is a good idea, but a quick Google didn't really give me an answer.

I'll stick with iTunes. I like it. I also like winamp but iTunes is much cleaner (operating and interface). I did see a program once for Winamp that downloaded the lyrics to songs being played. Seems like a neat idea.

On a side note. I use Windows Media Player for movie playback, but it won't play back everything, even with the best of the best codecs installed. Then I turn to VLC, BS Player, or WinDVD platinum.
For music, it's Winamp all the way for me, but I do use Itunes also and I have bought a couple of songs off from it. I will be really suprised if Winamp stays on top much longer though. Basically everyone loved Winamp 2 and Frankel helped program it. Then Winamp 3 came around and it sucked ass, but Frankel didn't help out on it. The only good programmer from it was that Peter Pawloski guy (I don't actually remember his last name) and he broke off to do Foobar. Then Winamp 5 came out and everyone loved it, thanks to Frankel helping out with the programming again. Frankel is gone now, along with Peter. Who is left to make a good Winamp?
On a second side note, hopefully Frankel is working on something p2p again:

wmp 10 can be rolled back if you set a system restore point before you upgrade...

I enjoy WMP 9 very much. I agree it can slow down your comp. a bit but I tolerate it because I'm happy with the quality it puts out. I'm surprised no one has mentioned to use the dfx audio enhancement with it. You can get it at http://www.fxsound.com. I've used earlier versions of WMP, JetAudio, and also have RealPlayer as a backup player I use just for real audio files. I think WMP has better audio quality than any of these before using dfx but with dfx is far, far better and I think excellent for music contrary to what a few others have said. I have the full purchased version of dfx for WMP and Real Player. Try the free version and I'd be surprised if you don't want to get the full version. I wanted to upgrade almost immedietely.
