Personally, those aren't IE alternatives. They still use the same damn rendering engine and come with the same security holes. Of the two tho, I prefer avant.

So you're that dead set again firefox? Pity you.

Maybe you should try opera. It has more of a professional feel and is still a completely different base than IE.

How about vanilla Mozilla? It is sweet... perhaps not as sweet as firefox, but still good. If you don't like the name, there is an extension to rename firefox randomly... mine currently says "hyperfrog."

if you wish to use an IE based browser I suggest Enigma from sutton Designs

I used Enigma for a long time because it has popup blocking (now they added Tabs, but the old copy I had didn't have them. It is extremely small and fast, though it does use mshtml rendering so many IE security vulnerabilities will be present in Enigma as well.

I've got Avant on a freeware setup and Opera 7.23 on a warez box. Avant is very good, a big improvement/enhancement on plain IE6. I haven't found any problem with it, it has good features such as tabbed browsing, password protected web log ins, configurable ad and pop up blocking, skins, limited mouse gestures, all the options you could want for opening and closing pages and windows etc. Overall it compares very well with Opera though Opera is ultimately more configurable and has a good download manager built in. The big advantage to my mind is that you need IE on Windows, if only to access Windows Updates, so it can make more sense to enhance it with something like Avant than to install a totally new browser like Opera/Mozilla/Netscape.

I tried Firefox and find it hard to understand why people get so excited by it. Possibly it is the best of the truly freeware stand alone browsers but I would choose Opera (even with ads) over Firefox every time.

I have downloaded MyIE2 but not installed it yet as I have read some criticism that it leaves problems behind if you uninstall, messing up file associations and shortcuts and plug ins. I am going to try it but will activate system restore first. I had a good look at MyIE2's website and can't see that it has any great advantage over Avant.

I'd suggest try Avant combined with Leechget download manager, it's all genuine freeware and works really well together, no bugs or issues.

I can't think of anything Firefox does better than Opera, and Opera is much much easier to set up, particularly if you want to import settings from IE and also the mail client is integrated and again imports mail and settings from OE very very well. IMO Opera looks better too with a huge range of skins. Opera is a really polished, sorted, mature piece of work whereas Firefox ...er...will be one day. I'd say that most users who switch from one browser to another want to easily transfer their settings/preferences/bookmarks to the new client. When this is not possible or if it is a pain in the ass that is enough to look for something else. Firefox is in this category. It has a bookmark auto import that is lame beyond belief, I had to find a 3rd party bookmark converter and do it myself, how crap is that? I found a free one but judging by the number of commercial apps I found this is a regular problem with transferring favorites to bookmarks. It's exactly this kind of half done, never quite finished feature that puts me off....particularly when there are browsers that do the same task perfectly. I can't help feeling that Firefox and lots of other cross platform projects have such a different approach to Windows only projects, that they just don't fit in nicely in the way that they would on a unix box.

Another thing I feel is that if a designer does a good job, is really expert, if he/she understands how people use an application then there is no need to leave it to the user to build the thing! I know it is apparently all about "freedom" but it should also be about making intelligent decisions and delivering a product that is ready to go. I understand that's just my feeling and the opposite view is equally valid. *small cough*:;)

I personally pick Opera over them all. Then between the 2 you listed, Avant is the best. Just my opinion...but Opera for sure is faster than any browser out there. Even Firefox fanboys will tell you that to be true, if they are honest.

Fortunately, all that's changing. Although web designers are still creating work-arounds for IE, at some point they will get fed up with it. I do my best to convert people to standards-compliant browsers, and so far have managed to do so with most of my friends - and none have looked back.

I prefer MyIE2. I just like how it looks/acts, and since its so close to IE, I never have to use another browser for any page.

Firefox is nice, but personally, I wouldn't use anything other than Opera or Internet Explorer.

Opera is really nice if you like personalizing your browser, but I won't pay (or download a crack or serial!), for it, and the ad-version is annoying

May not want to hear this but I say Mozilla. The new 1.7RC2 is out and its AWESOME! Much faster and safer than IE. No pop ups, quicker loading, no spyware installers, great safe email client, stable, doesnt superglue itself into every corner of your OS.

Of those, I'd choose MyIE2. My reasons primarily are similar to phalkon's--it just works and looks nice, and (obviously) it feels familiar because it is only an IE shell. There are lots of useful plugins available, too.

Note that I would also use Firefox as well.

if you`re going to use an ie clone try greenbrowser...it`s very good...the latest avant browser is good too. you can download mozilla extensions that allow you to use mozilla firefox in tandem with ie6, for example : IE View for Windows.... i like the page loading speed of firefox, especially loading heavy graphics...in this respect ie6 lags far behind

i must say i am usually a firefox fan but i just downloaded opera 7.50 and got rid of the ad banner and i am very impressed.. it certainly is pretty to look at and the email client is very cool as well... also, the download manager is very good for downloading mp3`s....

its too hard to decide, everyone has their favorites and the browser they like. I have firefox running as well as netscape and internet explorer. I dont need any more browser but the ones people suggesting, is something i may try later. =)

you can remove IE in XP; Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows components. i'm not on a win7 box currently but i expect it'll be in a similiar place. used to be the first thing i did on a new installation til i met nLite and Tiny XP XD

i like IE9 though, but yeah, chrome is the browser to beat right now. also Iron for you privacy conscious guys (this means you drew :D)
