Im desperate, this has got to be the one place that will have an awnser. So I know a good deal about computers, but I really only use a p2p network (KazaA) for music downloading.....but i keep hearing about how its illegal and how im going to go to jail for it. So is there any real truth to this?
arent yall worried about getting in trouble for using ur p2p networks?
Is there any way to keep on downloading my music that will not get me in trouble?
Do only KazaA users get sued?
Have any suggestions/ways/programs that could help me out?
PLEEEEASE help because I cant find a straight up awnser anywhere, and I figure if there is a solution its gotta be here :mellow

1.) Use the search button. That's what it's there for.
2.) People are getting sued (usually for about $3k each on average. None have gone to jail as its a civil suit, not a criminal one.
3.) Am I worried? no.
4.) Not only KaZaA users get sued, but there have been cases of ed2k, gnutella, among a few others I believe, all of whom were sharing around 500 mp3s a piece.

But you have by far the best chance of getting sued with Kazaa. It is only uploading they are currently suing for. You could switch off your sharing, but that will damage the network and is exactly what the people suing want you to do.
Click on "File Sharing" at the top of this page and look through your options. Ares is fairly foolproof, but its increasing popularity will probably soon attract unwanted attention. The RIAA (the people suing, amoung others on a lesser scale) are likely to want to send the message that lawsuits can't be avoided by swtiching networks.
Different developers are pulling different directions to try and keep people safe. Protowall blocks IPs that belong to groups searching for copyright files, but many say it is ineffective.
MUTE works by everyone proxying for everyone else. It isn't 100% anonymous, as there may (or may not) be a case against people for proxying copyright files. If this happens, it wont be for a while yet. However, MUTE is slow. Perhaps patience is a small price for security.
Piolet and Blubster both use the MP2P network. The developer recently annouced that it is now more difficult to track and sue users of the network. Far from perfect, but perhaps all that is needed at this stage.
If you do decide to change network, or just your program, remember to clean all the spyware and adware from your computer which you installed along with kazaa.
Someone did an excellent post on anonymity, comparing file sharing to sex and getting sued to STDs. The various methods of protection against getting sued were compared to different contraceptives. I should have bookmarked it. Does anyone know where it is?
