This is looking pretty damn sweet. Definitely has the potential to blow away what is currently out there. I may wait a while for it to drop in price, but I wouldn't mind having one someday.

A dashing display helps this handheld gaming device overcome some minor flaws.

It's black and shiny with clear acrylic buttons; it plays games, music, and movies; and it's coming to a store near you March 24. It's Sony's $250 PlayStation Portable, and after two days of intense testing, I've reached a conclusion: You're probably going to want one of these, despite a few minor flaws.

The first thing you notice when you remove the unit from the box is that big display.

The PSP's 4.3-inch, 480-by-272-pixel TFT LCD screen is absolutely beautiful, with bright, vibrant color on display during both game and movie play. Everyone who peeked at the PSP commented about how good the screen looked, and I have to agree, it's striking.

I've played Ridge Racer PSP quite a bit and enjoyed it, though I think the actaul PSP looks like a sanitary pad.

Agreed, But with me it was more their persistance on proprietery technology that means that I will not buy one.

Ok lets say you get a PSP, but it can only read UMD disks, and these are not recordable (because as it stands they are a proprietery technology and you cant get UMD recorders), so if i want to watch a movie (that e.g. i already have on DVD) i have to buy it again on the UMD if i want to watch it on the go.

Yes i could use a memory stick, and here again only sony proprietery MMS sticks, which (for a 1gb stick for a DivX file (assuming 700mb file) ) are very expensive (+ i am limited to one movie per trip, unless i buy more then one memstick).

this is just an example, the PSP's price is quite competative, but then when you get locked into all the DRM and proprietery hardware crap they give you you will end up paying far more then the original cost of the PSP over time.

The only bonus with it is that it seems to have a USB Port, so if someone manages to port linux to it (crosses fingers) you could then technically use normal USB flash sticks / hard disks with the PSP (in which case i may consider buying one)

Homemade video remedying some stuck pixel issues.

When the PSP launched, early adaptors fussed over the amount of dead and stuck pixels plaguing their hardware, forcing many to exchange their machines over and over until finding a clean machine. For users experiencing these troubles, however, PSP enthusiast site PSP Vault claims to have a video that can fix these troublesome quirks.

LCD screens are notorious for their pixel-related troubles, and it's not uncommon for TV owners to use a DVD that flashes red, green and blue over the screen in a seizure-like pattern, hoping to cure the ailing pixels. Sometimes it works, often it doesn't, but the same technique has now been applied to PSP.

"So I thought about it for a while, and I said, what the heck, I'll try it," said PSP Vault member Nickwiz14, who created the video. "So I made my own video that does this, and it works!"

My opinion is the psp have advantage in graphics and sound and also the amount of quality and quatity of its games. But the innovation still goes to ds.
