I know myself it not loaded when my Windows starts up and if you think so then do a search for bsplayer.exe and del the file and use another media player, I assume your talking about the one that come with klcodec. It give you the option if you want to install it or not. I don't use it because it doesn't run well on my machine but Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and System Mechanic 4 Professional doesn't see the ones on my computer as spyware or adware, Norton doesn't see it as a virus so I assume it clean. What software installed it? You should be able to block it because your firewall should have an option that if any software tries to make an internet call then your firewall should pick it up. All you have to do is to tell your firewall to stop bsplayer.exe from making an internet call because even expleror.exe must go though your firewall before it can complete the call. The only exception is the firewall live update but why you want to block that.

Once you're apathetic to this kind of thing, you almost authorize software manufacturers to collect whatever information they want. The information they collect may very well be harmless statistics now, but history has shown us Industry is quite capable of collecting information we'd prefer they didn't have. Eg. What if they started collecting hash marks indicating copyright infringement?

I never heard of nor have I seen nero call home.

What version and exactly what are you referring to?

Winamp will call home but has option to disable it. If there is not documented reasons or option to disable calling home without your approval is not right.

I do know some apps will call home as soon as you install, and I have seen it on my firewall, but I do not see many legitamate apps do that unless they actually tell you about it in their documentation and explain why.

A good firewall will stop anything from calling home unless you need it for updates or some specific reason that is explained.

You''re right though. Us paranoids do worry about stuff like that.

Do you think it could ever happen that some call-home app (maybe not even BSplayer) might send some information with it's bad self home, that we'd prefer it didn't? And if one did it, do you think 2 might, and so on?

Personally until I know the rock hard answer to that, and it's "no", I'm going to continue to care if an ap I own calls home.

I remember some time ago before even spyware had a name, saying to people "I just downloaded this ap, and ever since I did my machine has slowed down. Do you think it's possible a program would ever watch you to see where you go, then send the information home as marketing information?". The ap was called Gator.

They'd answer me with the P word. That was the first time I ever heard the P word.
