My Norton Antivirus subscription is due for renewal, and I'm thinking of upgrading to the full Norton Internet Security package for $AUS100, as I don't have a firewall and am extremely keen to get a good one installed asap. Just wondered if anyone could advise me if there are cheaper options out there... from what I've heard all the firewall freeware has disappeared now, apart from Zone Alarm, which I've been told creates problems with Kazaa Lite.
Anyway, if anyone can tell me a better and cheaper option than upgrading to Norton's full internet security package, I'd be grateful. I use Win98SE.

Kazaaa Lite and any other P2P app works just fine with Zone Alarm.
For antivirus I recommend AVG http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

THIS is a P2P portal, not a FREEWARE portal!! *SMACK* dammit
You go get what you want, including Sygate Pro and NAV 2004 etc etc.
Btw . . . if youre going to run W98SE, live with the way it doesnt manage newer apps, and NOT reallocate memory! Youre warned.

You can get Sygate personal firewall for free, it's very good. It has a much simpler interface than ZA, much less GUI candy. But it is excellent and reliable. Zone Alarm has a memory leak problem and so does Sygate ...but I assume that if you use 98 it get's rebooted daily at least so no big deal and Sygate and ZA are as secure as Norton unless you use MS Internet Connection Sharing, in which case you'll have to close a few ports yourself cos your firewall will leave them open..
I use Norton Internet Security Pro 2004 and it's the best software firewall I've tried. It's weird but you're the 3rd person this week who has mentioned software they paid for. Is there something going on I should know about? Anyway if you're in the habit of paying for this kind of stuff then Norton is excellent and their different packages integrate very nicely. You can get free AV from AVG, it's OK but doesn't update virus definitions as quickly or as often as Norton and other paid software...to be honest it probably doesn't matter too much as long as you know.
So you could keep all your money in your pocket and run a free firewall and free AV. Sound good?
You go get what you want, including Sygate Pro and NAV 2004 etc etc but if he gets them on K lite they will be probably be corrupted or come with very unpleasant nasty thing disguised as keygen lol
All this talk of buying software...it's rather vulgar don't you think? Perhaps we are seeing some kind of moral decline in the world's youth.

I am currantly using AVG for my anti virus, and Sygate free for my firewall, but those are on xp. That thought considered, as i still am running 98Se on another partition, and the norton is very good at fixing registry problems, and those just seem to happen all too often with that OS. Personally i have found 98 to be a very memory leaky os, and would recommend an upgrade to xp if possible. All that considered if you wish to keep running 98se the norton although being a system hog is a good choice to keep thngs up and running.

I've used all the big AntiVirus software packages, and my favourite is NOD32.
Firewall-wise, ZAPro has never let me down.

Christ, the sarcasm. You lot sure know how to dent a guy's pride.
OK, so thanx for all the tips, I think I'm gonna try the freeware route and if I don't like it, I may just be a good citizen and cough up for the Norton gear. BTW, as much as I love getting all kindsa stuff from KLite, with the amount of garbage being shovelled into the system right now, I wouldn't trust a downloaded antivirus program if it offered me a beer and a bj.
Oh, and no previous, begoodbebad, just can't be arsed with forums unless I have something to say...

This may explain why ZA completely messed up my Explorer with the 98SE I'm running. I've since switched over to Sygate. Should have XP running sometime this summer though. :black

i`m trying out the latest agnitium outpost pro firewall at the moment and it seems to do the job very well....usually i use the built-in xp firewall and steve gibsons service port patches as well as shutting down any other ports that are not required....nothing nasty ever gets in..
