Myster Public Release 8

Myster Public Release 8 is out and can be found here:

Public Release 8 brings the following advances to Myster:

-Greater than 25% search performance gain
-New UDP client and server sections
-Refined and reorganized Search window controls
-1 user can no longer hog all a server's download spots
-New tab graphics in the Server Stats window. They now actually look like tabs (hurray)

Myster Public Release 8 remains a cross platform file sharing solution with versions for Mac OS X, Mac OS Classic, Windows, Linux, and Sun Solaris. This public release represents over 2 months of hard work, spread across 2 major developer releases.

As always, the Myster code is opensource, hosted on SourceForge and available under the GPL.

Myster works behind firewalls. It always has. You just have to configure your firewall to let the right traffic through.

I run a firewall and am able to use Myster with no problems. As with all apps that communicate with outside sources, you need to configure your firewall to work with them. Allowing Myster to work through firewalls is as easy as setting some rules in your firewall software.

That said, you should read this FAQ which details why Myster doesn't work ideally in certain circumstances. namely when connecting to the internet through NATs like Apple's Airport wireless system. Here's the link: http://www.mysternetworks.com/config/download_error_faq.php

It runs on its own network.

The Myster network was built from scratch as a stand alone distributed peer to peer network which does not piggy-back off of any other network. There has been Myster community interest to develop plugins which enable access to other networks, but the Myster network exists on it's own without having to rely on Kazaa or Gnutella users. It's currently a smaller network, populated with a large proportion of Japanese users, but it's autonomous to anyother network currently out there. (save the internet)

Myster cannot function as a server behind NATs. eliminate the NAT or configure the NAT hardware to forward TCP and UDP port 6669 to the computer running Mytser.

I think this explains why myster is not very popular.
