View Full Version : Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 RC3

File Description:
Spybot Search and Destroy searches your hard drive for so-called spy- or adbots; that is, little modules that are responsible for the ads many programs display. Many of these modules also transmit information, including your surfing behavior on the Internet. If it finds such modules, it can remove them. In most cases the host still runs fine after removing the spyware/adware.

Another feature is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files, started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three major browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, and Opera.

ROTFL, no kidding. Also as a note this version picked up some Alexia crap that was missed by all my other programs. It seems to run a lot better, although it does drag a bit when removing things on older PCs.

You and me both, as ran all of my other spyware removal tools before running the new spybot so i could give it a real comparison test. All I can say is well done.

Thats odd. Is the scan process taking a long time, or is it just the spywar removal that takes a long time? Also, as noted it does take a bit longer on older cpus like my 950.

Another thing to consider, are you using a filesharing program while doing this? it is possible there is a conflict between the two, or that you are tying up too much of your cpu, or ram.

well it use to take a few mins and now it takes hours..i thought it was something to do with the music files, as my virus scan recently takes longer too..but i can see an option to pick what folders it searches. Yes, its the scanning process

I have a feeling its not spybot if your virus scan is taking longer also. The scan actually runs quite quickly for me, its the removal of spyware that takes a while. I would try and remember what you installed, or changed at about the same time your antivirus slowed down. Also another thing to try is an online scan here:http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If that doesnt find anything, you can run a multitude of tests here:http://www.pcworld.com/pcwtools/index/0,00.asp
They have a nice group of tests at that site. good luck.

Yup its a nice piece of software, and although its a beta, i have had no problems as of yet. This is the kind of thing i enjoy doing here, finding nice new software releases to help folks get rid of all of the crap that somehow ends up on our PCs.

Also note that i didnt notice any mention of tea timer in the latest version. That is a good thing IMHO as it was the culprit causing lockups for many people,as it was very leaky.

It not bad version this 1.3 beta. I have Norton 2003 running while doing the scan and it takes about 20 minutes on a Pentium 3 500 Mhz with 384 MB of mmory. I clean thing that the other missed.

For those checking their spybot versions the latest release is 1.3 beta, RC 5 and it totally rocks. Better and more accurate than ever. Spyware doesn't stand a chance. The latest version can be downloaded from the spybot forums (link available at spybot site). The main spybot site still shows spybot 1.2 version, which is the latest non beta version. Great program and free. Take the word of countless zeropaid users. Don't be without it.

Hunter, I was browsing the forums over there. The reason for many machines locking up with tea timer, was because it was in debug mode. The developer was trying to get feedback. Either the current version, or the next version should be the normal TeaTimer.

In release candidate 5 (the latest), there is an option in the installer for TT, its off by default now.
