Hey guys, I have some questions about newsgroups. I know there are ALOT of them but what I wanted to ask is how many are out there that offer high quality new music? Also, whats the privacy like on those? I would never download copyrighted materials of course but if I accidently did, what are my chances of being busted? Also, I found out comcast only has Giganews available for free to their customers but its an account limited to 1 gig a month. I read this site http://www.newsgroupservers.net/#NNTP and it lists many servers you can buy access to, are they any good?

As a newsgroup user, I found the newsgroups to be a great source of music. As for being busted for downloading copyrighted material, as far as I know, what you download is between your isp provider ( and/or Giganews in your case) and you. The newsgroups are not networked likes p2p programs are.

I am checking out Easynews. It looks fair and it says it doesnt keep records of what you download. So, is it easy to find the music or is it tough navigating?

If its owned by a major movie studio chances are its not "legal". But just because its not "legal" doesnt mean you CANT download it, it just means that you shouldnt discuss it in public on a message board :) Get my drift?

Umm... are you serious? Basically, if you can buy it, it is probably copyrighted and you shouldn't download it if you are afraid of getting busted. Any CD you see in a store is copyrighted. Any movie you see at a store is copyrighted. Any game or software you see at a store is copyrighted. This response is copyrighted so don't attempt to copy it or I will sue you.

Is usenetserver.com anygood? They have an unlimited plan for like 15 a month. Thats a pretty hot deal. I hear easynews is great but their bandwidth cap is a little low for me. If I get a newgroup account I will be after video as much as audio and 6gigs is gonna fly fast as hell on that.

the best way is to just get it from your isp, normally

Usenetserver.com is excellent probably the best there is i actually use it all the time for everything.I pay for the $39.95 for 3 months and there is no d/l cap and your speed goes as fast as your isp provider can give you..It is the same for the $15 dollar a month plan as well..No cap very fast speeds..I would rate it on a scale of 1-10---->20 lol
It is the greatest plan out there for so little money so i would suggest you get this now!!!

I wish I could. Comcast only offers giganews and it is limited to a tiny 1 gig per month. And from talking to other comcast users, they say that comcast doesnt allow the binary groups on its version of giganews. Comcast stinks in this area, although in performance I am more than happy with them. I ALWAYS get more than 360KB per sec. :)

Usenetserver.com is very good, however they do not scale all the way up to your ISP's limit. I do believe they have a 2.2 or 2.5 downstream maximum on their servers. If you do 3 or 4 downstream it's not a big deal of course.

There's a few really good news providers, usenetnews is one, 100proofnews.com is another, but they seemingly always have problems. Newsfeeds is another good one. Easynews. Buzzardnews, but they outsource usenetserver and add additional restrictions. Astraweb is another. There's many popular providers, I'd suggest shopping around for prices first, then move on to retention and completion which are very important. Giganews and Usenetserver are both famous for their retention and completion rates.

Bleh sorry for ranting.

Oh, and I use Grabit and PowerGrab as my main readers. Along with Xnews if I feel like it.
