I was told about winmx and how great it is--but I have yet to figure it out. I have been playing around with it for a couple of days and have a few questions--and yes, before I posted here I checked out all the FAQ sites that are out there.
1st...why when I am downloading a movie will it not allow me to view it or even a portion of it? ex. downloading one and it was 20% done--if I clicked on play absolutely nothing happens..if I click on open it tells me"could not open file because file name was bad" this has happen with serveral downloads so I am assuming it is not just one corrupt file.
2nd..why when I am hooking up with a t3 transfer is it still taking 10+hrs to even get 10% of a large file? is that normal? btw--I have a cable hook up and am set as a primary connection. thanks for all the help

t3=because they're sharing with other ppl too, and it's most likely a overloaded college server
otherwise= WinMx just isn't designed that way. Try k-lite.

First question, You'll have to got too www.avipreview.com so you can preview your downloads(yes mpegs too) as winmx has no built in player. Some files may be named in japanesse text. There is a way to change it, i think, but i usually just look till I find an english source.
Second, WhenMx is not known for speed but rather for rare files. Here are some tips though on getting better results.
1.Do a search for alternates in the transfer window on the file your trying to get. Now in the search window find the file and hit the plus(+) sign to open it up. Right click and highlight "download group" and select. This way you get far more sources than just from the transfer window. I sometimes get over 100 sources for new movies like cam rips (Its faster than BT using this method as I got a zombie movie in just a couple of hours!).
2. Go to the "Networks" window and hit refresh. Now repeat step 1. Do this untill you find enough sources, but remeber, this causes people in your upload que to lose their place. So unless you dont care, keep this to a minimum.
Hope this helps out! :;) .
EDIT: Just noticed you said you were using primary connection. You should change to a secondary for better performance. Primary eats up all your computers resources and makes winmx run like a ford Pinto on one cylender. This is your main problem.

ok...one other thing--and not positive that it is related--but just happen when idownloaded winmx...my windows media player wont work...is that some weird side effect?

WinMx should not have effected media player at all as it has no built in player software. What do you mean by wont work? Will it not open any files? Maybe check to see what file extensions you have checked for WMP to open.
Also, if youve tried to view a corrupted file it will cause WMP to stop responding sometimes. Do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and check in your program manager to see if its still running. If so hit end task

I must have opened a corrupt file...I deleted everything to do with files I had gotten from winmx and then reset and restarted..and media player is working again--you know--I have used kazaa lite for years and have not really had problems-recently I had started seeing more bogus music files and had an interest in downloading movies..so someone suggested that I use winmx--saying that it is much better than kazaa--maybe when I get the hang of it, it will be--but right now it just seems a jumbled mess to me...not very organized or user friendly. figuring out all the queues and the 1of6, 0of12 in lower..locally remotely queued etc..

I tried your trick of searching for alts and then downloading group...what does it mean when it says "remotely queued 12 12 18" ?

Remotely qued means your number 12 in line for the file on one persons list, 12 on another and 18 on the other and so on. Winmx can take a bit of learning to know how all the functions work. wins que system is unlike most other networks. When you connect to some one, you keep that connection until the file finishes. Unless they disconnect of course. Over the long term this is faster than getting small chunks a bit at a time on large files. Make sure you set your "auto enter que" on each file to 100, so as you can get inline for the movies. I also set the find more sources to every 15 minutes for best results. If your file turns red, hit the plus sign and highlight enter remote que. Stick with it for awhile, youll figure it all out.

Yes, and keep in mind that there is often a little more communication and etiquette involved with winmx. If you're in someones queue for a file, ask them nicely for a move up. Some will no problem, while others might want a trade. I've had some users move me to first in everything if I did the same for them. Also, make sure that you are sharing stuff before you try to get bigger and harder stuff. WinMx has problems with leechers. Where is a whois and browse function that you can find by right-clicking on a username. You can see what people are sharing. They can see you, too. And there are many who will gladly cancel your download if you're not being a fair sharer. You said you used Kazaa before, so you should have files. Make sure you are sharing them properly.

This was the help site I used to first learn the ins and outs. Perhaps you can get some more tips from here.

This is a site for verified movies, as well as a great anti-leech program (I use it personally, but spend some time with WinMx first before trying it.)
Good luck.

you guys are great..thanks. I do have plenty of files in my shared folder from DLing on kazaa..that's where my downloads on winmx go to also, but I don't see anything on the page that says I'm sharing--like kazaa does, so I'm not positive that I am sharing. hope so. btw--what's an anti-leeching program?

really don't mean to be a pest..but guess I am being one..lol if I used that avipreview program and the vid froze after a few seconds and the counter still kept going..does that mean it's a bad movie file?

Its probably not a bad file but you most likely had a gap from multisourcing.
an anti leech program is a program that cuts off people from downloading from you that do not share anything. Mx moni is the most popular but i like leechammer more. It runs more stable for me. browsing people to find out if their sharing is a hit or miss kinda thing. Sometimes you can be unable to see some ones shared folder even when your downloading from them. Leechammer is more able to tell if people are actually sharing.

When you hit the 'shared files' button, you should see the folder/s that you are sharing on the screen. If you do not, then hit the add button you see up top.
Also, as long as you are giving an honest effort to learn, there are always people wiling to help. We were all in the same spot once. You just need to watch out for @$$hats now and then.

Many people who show T3 as a connection (43 mbps) are lying or do not know. Most people have DSL or Cable.
WinMX has a poor interface now that we are in 2004, and better solutions exist. However, for finding people with like interests and chat, winMX is still useful.
Use DivXFix to correct/repair partial avi downloads to preview them.
the 'official' DivFix page:

Good luck!

ok--I admit..I'm in love..lol well, as close to it as I can get with a program. thanks to all your help I have gotten the avipreview, ffdshow and 3 movies that are out of print and I was able to view the partials-so I know they are legit!still have plenty to learn, but thanks for the great start. I think the problem I had was trying to get one of those new "ripped" movies (scooby doo 2) and it was not a good file--still would not work after I did all that was suggested, so I just stopped the download and deleted.thanks again for all the help

One more thing i forgot thats VERY important to winmx, you must cap you upload bandwidth, reserving just a little for yourself. If you dont, your downloads will be really slow. This is caused by the checking Winmx does to try to make sure your files are making it to you without corruption. If your upload bandwidth is clogged winmx cant check it fast so your download slows. This is key!
and forget that scooby doo 2, its trash anyway!
