LOS ANGELES - Sophie B. Hawkins (news) is going after what she feels are corrupt music industry people by taking them to court. It's not a big-money lawsuit either. She's going to small claims court.
Hawkins found her new album, "Wilderness," for sale on an Internet auction site five months before its release. She had her lawyers send cease and desist letters and it didn't work. Hawkins went to court yesterday to fight the seller and to get back the $300 she paid to get back her own CD.
She says she's trying to send the message that songwriters need to take action every time a CD is sold illegally. She says it's not about the money, but the principle. She says a fan paid $300 for her CD and she's going to get his money back and buy him a copy of her CD and send it to him.
The judge has not yet ruled. "Wilderness" will be released in legal form on April 20.
